Jan Carlos Ozuna Rosado (born March 13, 1992), known by his stage name, Ozuna, is a Puerto Rican Latin trap and reggaeton singer, having released many hits such as "Si No Te Quiere", "No Quiere Enamorarse", "Te Vas", "Dile Que Tu Me Quieres", "En La Intimidad", "Tu Foto", "Quiero Repetir", "El Farsante", "Se Preparó" and "La Modelo" and having been featured on several hits from the genre, most notably on De La Ghetto's "La Ocasión", Chris Jeday's "Ahora Dice”and the remix, Daddy Yankee's "La Rompe Corazones", Wisin's "Escápate Conmigo" and Bad Bunny's "Diles" and "Soy Peor (Remix)".
Ozuna was born in San Juan to a Dominican father and Puerto Rican mother. As stated in the eponymous song from his album Odisea, he grew up very poor and was mainly raised by his paternal grandmother; his father, who worked as a dancer for reggaeton pioneer Vico C for three years, was fatally shot when Ozuna was only three, and his mother was not financially stable enough to raise him. Throughout the 2000s decade and during his college career in New York City, he found great inspiration for his musical career.
Ozuna began writing songs at age 12. He made his debut as a singer in 2012 with the song "Imaginando". He previously went by the name J Oz. He worked with Musicologo y Menes and gained popularity.
In 2014, he signed a recording contract with Golden Family Records and began to publish his songs on YouTube. In that same year, he started his ongoing popular streak with the song "Si No Te Quiere", originally featuring rapper D.OZi. This song was a big success on the radio, and was eventually well known across Latin America. He has since performed in many shows across South America. Today, Ozuna enjoys great success and popularity as an artist across Latin America.
In the beginning of 2016, Ozuna became well known for his appearance in the single "La Ocasión", a collaboration with DJ Luian, Mambo Kingz, De La Ghetto, Arcángel and Anuel AA. The single reached number 22 on the Hot Latin Songs chart. In March, Ozuna released a remix of his song "No Quiere Enamorarse", featuring Daddy Yankee. In September, he released his most popular single to date, "Dile Que Tú Me Quieres", which earned him a place at number 13 on the Billboard Latin chart at the end of the year. Ozuna also had two other songs make it on this list: "Si Tu Marido No Te Quiere (Remix)" (featuring Arcángel and Farruko) and "En La Intimidad", which reached the top 30.
In 2017, his album Odisea was released. The single "Te Vas" reached more than 560 million views on YouTube, making it Ozuna's most popular song on social media. Despite his short tenure in the Urban genre, Ozuna has become remarkably successful, managing to release numerous songs that quickly become viral hits. As a result, many important figures in the genre consider Ozuna to be one of the best artists and the most successful of the new generation of reggaetón artists.
In 2017, Ozuna released many singles, including "Dile Que Tu Me Quieres (Remix)" (feat. Yandel), "Después de las 12" and, in April of that year, "Tu Foto", which reached the 10th spot on the Latin Billboard list, and reached more than 640 million views on YouTube. He also released several collaboration songs, including "La Rompe Corazones" (feat. Daddy Yankee), "Escápate Conmigo" (feat. Wisin), "Ahora Dice" (with J Balvin, Arcángel & Chris Jeday) among others. "Se Preparó" was released on August 10, 2017 and, as of February 2018, has more than 650 million views on YouTube.
In December 2017, Ozuna released the single "La Modelo" featuring Cardi B. Following the release the song debuted at No. 52 on the January 6-dated Billboard Hot 100 (becoming Ozuna's first entrance to the ranking as a lead act, following his featurings with Wisin's "Escápate Conmigo" and Natti Natasha's "Criminal") and at No. 3 on Hot Latin Songs chart.
Award shows and nominations
In 2017, Ozuna won the category of Best Breakthrough Artist at the Premios Juventud.
Ozuna is part of the newest wave of urban singers coming out of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, and has a deep friendship with the controversial rapper Anuel AA. Ozuna has had more than 10 songs exceed 200 million views on YouTube, echoing the beginnings of other successful urban artists, like Farruko and Maluma. While many of his songs feature explicit sexual lyrics, he has avoided lyrics that explicitly objectify or disrespect women – one of the few in the Latin trap genre to do so – out of respect for his wife, Taina, and daughter, Sofia. As described by a The New York Times article, Ozuna "can work across all these genres at the same time is a testament to the current fluidity of Latin pop, but also to the effectiveness of his singing. He has a sweet, nimble voice that he sometimes deploys like a balladeer, and sometimes like a rapper."
Ozuna performed his first official tour, "Odisea Tour", which began on May 26 2017, in Atlanta, Georgia, and traveled more than 25 cities in the United States. Ozuna has announced the dates for his 2018 Aura tour, which will include more than 29 cities across the US.
