Biography

Bennett began playing guitar at the age of six, learning clarinet for the school orchestra then returning to guitar at 15, playing in school and local bands.

He studied at the Grove School of Music in Los Angeles, where he immersed himself in the worlds of harmony, music theory, arranging, composition and performance. This led to Bennett studying at Berklee College of Music, where he graduated with honors.

While working in studio orchestras including Universal studios for the T.V. show Magnum P.I., Bennett accepted an offer to join a Japanese group, Shonentai. He moved to Japan, touring the country and performing throughout Southeast Asia.

After returning to L.A., an offer to perform with Marilyn McCoo turned into a two year term with the reunited Original 5th Dimension. Seeking to present himself as an artist, Bennett began performing as a leader, forming Baton Records. The first release, 'Jazz Guitar' consists of original music as well as an inventive reworking of standards. 'Jazz Guitar' is a trio recording with Joe LaBarbera on drums and Dave Carpenter on bass. During this time, Bennett performed in most every jazz club in Los Angeles, performed and headlined jazz festivals and performed in Brazil.

The second release, 'The View From Above' consists of all original music performed, composed, mixed and mastered by Bennett with the exception of drums and percussion.

Bennett's third CD, 'Storytelling' showcases a quartet with the addition of piano. A wide palette of music is presented, leaning toward a more contemporary jazz approach with world music influences.

The newest release 'Groove Time' , produced by multi Grammy winning Paul Brown includes Ricky Lawson on drums and Greg Adams on Flugelhorn. 'Groove Time' includes the single 'Tell Me About It', an infectious groove that features Bennett's soulful musicality.
