How come British artists find it so hard to crack the states. Is it because the music isn't good enough or is it just that it doesn't get noticed over there i mean there has been Dido recently, Craig David, Daniel Bedingfield, Coldplay but about five years ago there was like All Saints, Spice Girls, Five, SClub 7 in the USA chart? what has changed?

Have you noticed that the British people who are in the U.S Charts at the moment can sing? Some more people like Mis-Teeq, Lemar and Alex Parks, I bet could all break America.

Five and Sclub 7 were popular in the USA
if you go to the Top40 charts.com USA chart and go to 28-09-1998, you will see that Five are at no.15 with When the Lights Go Out
Also if you go to 14-04-2001 Sclub 7 are at no.14 with Never Had A Dream Come True

One of the problems that UK artists have is establishing themselves on US radio playlists which often favour US artists. Craig David spent an entire year promoting himself over in the US in order to gain any success. It seems particularly hard for UK R&B artists these days. S Club 7 finally peaked at #10 with "Never Had A Dream Come True". They have further success with their TV series.

FIVE had a very short-period of ''airplay' success with "When the Lights Go Out". It's a good point to note, this the same is happening with all British Bands like Five: with promotional only in NY and LA you can't establish real success at US market. Craig David and Coldplay had prove this: if you want to be successful in US, you must travel the 3/5 of States (35 States), you have to appear on David Letterman Show and having a rotation in MTV/VH1. That's why only Coldplay and Radiohead oir before Bee Gees, ELO etc had a duration in the US. All the others talks about 'British Bands in US' and living their myth which is manufactured by NME, Uncutt and other magazines. Sometime, the British have to face the reality of the US MARKET - and not the reality TV! :)
lemar has got the backing of fatman scoop

Yes this is true about UK R&B, because they can't understand that USA and LA isn't only US. The country is very big and probably only clever guys like Craig David, Radiohead and Coldplay uses the internet :-)

S Club 7 were semi-popular here. I dunno All Saints...or I do and cant remember 'um. And Im not a Coldplay gal, I dunno I dun like 'em much
But I really like David Benningfield, Craig David, Dido, and Spice Girls ruled back when.
A lot of our British acts have high potential. It will take a lot of work but i pray that we will dominate your chart and there won't be all this hip hop in the uk chart.
And looking above
In the year Craig David spent in the US it ruined his career in Britain.

I think the reason Coldplay and Radiohead have has success where others have failed is because America doesnt really have groups like them , they're something different. Craig David is just another RnB act out of thousands in the US.

A few British acts are having success in the States at the moment though- Franz Ferdinand, The Cure, Joss Stone and Lostprophets.

sonofaque you couldn't be more wrong, American artists are not the best, they are the most commercialised.

No Way - American Artists are not the best. You give us 50 Cent and Eminem and think you are the best. We have a more Musical Taste and if you think the 50 and Eminem are music you are wrong the are Rap. Eamon is an even worse story.

I mean what one would assume is that in the age of the internet, inter-action between various country-based charts would be more rapid.
Well apparently not. Witness the difficulty of UK new acts breaking to the mainstream US charts. As far as music goes, we are still in a pre-internet age in which US charts are immune to most acts from UK or other parts of Europe.
They artists and the record marketers must still be doing a lot of swimming in the Atlantic before reaching the other side of the ocean. So they just suffer from so much exhaustion that they stop trying anyhow... :)
The reverse is not true though, as many American acts are seen everywhere in Europe.

the reason why coldplay cracked the usa is beacause they are broing
their music is ok but they play the game they prepare to suck up to everyone
bands like oasis and artists like robbie williams are superstars worldwide except the usa as they could not be bothered which is fair enough
why should artists make extra effort in usa when 95% of their music is rubbish
all rap and mariah carey
radiohead are good but depressing - i dunno why usa likes them - they are so overrated - they are good - but never best band in world
artists like, oasis, the verve, blur and ocean colour scene had the songs to break usa
and robbie
james blunt is simply appauling

I think all music is a matter of taste. Nobody should critiscise others likes or dislikes. It's all in the eye of the beholder
Ar regards British music in the USA, I believe that the DJ's do not give airing time to British artists. It's a shame, as the British DJ's give a LOT of space to American artists - even forsaking some of the Brits artists.
An example - American Pop Idol Kelly Clarkson has been plugged constantly, and has been in the British charts FOREVER! (yes - she has got a good voice, IMO) The British and FIRST ever Pop Idol - Will Young, has, for 4 years been very very popular in UK and has had 3 top albums, numerous prestidgeous Awards, and is now in the Film - Mrs Henderson Presents. He has a fantastic voice, but has anybody in the USA been able to hear him sing?
