Joe Nichols is a traditional country artist with a twist. He's young, he's hot and he's awesome. His voice is a rich, deep baritone that will vibrate your heart and draw you to him like a kitten to cream.
He believes in the music he sings and you can hear the soul that he puts into each and every cut on all of his albums.
His latest album III recently went gold and the first single for that album "Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off " went number one.
Here is the release from his fan club page about "Tequila"
Joe Nichols’ single “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off” has achieved Gold Digital Sales Certification, a distinction given by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for digital downloads in excess of 100,000, as announced today by Universal South’s Senior Vice President/General Manager, Van Fletcher. The single, that topped the radio charts at #1 earlier this year, is the lead release from his current CD, III.
He has released a second single from III which is presently in the 22 slot of the BB charts and moving up quickly and the video will be released shortly for "Size Matters" (someday) as he just finished shooting it in Toronto the week of March 5th. Joe was also in Toronto the following week, promoting the video on CMT.Canada and some of the local radio stations.
Here is a link to that interview :

I love Joe's music. His cd, Revelation has some awesome tracks, including The Shade, I Wish That Wasn't All, No Time to Cry, Farewell Party and of course one of the singles from the album, If Nobody Believed In You.
http://img465.imageshack.us/img465/1598/header5qo.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Man With A Memory is also incredibly noteworthy and a must for your traditional music collection. The first song on this cd is "The Impossible".
Joe Nichols is currently on a break from touring with Toby Keith. I have seen Joe's opening performance for Toby's ThrowDownTour and he is peeling back the layers of reserve that he has previously held on to. Playing to sold out crowds of 20,000 plus fans has given Joe the confidence and stage presence that will drive him forward to achieve the same respect and status that has graced Alan Jackson and George Strait. His commitment to maintaining the core of the traditional country sound will ensure not only his appeal, but also his longevity on the country music front.
To hear him perform covers by an artist such as Merle Haggard shows how Joe can own the song without changing the very basics that made the song great to begin with. He understands the music he chooses to sing. Life would not be complete without hearing Joe's version of My Old Friend the Blues, Family Tradition or Footlights.
Cudos Joe and you my friend are awesome.

Universal South Artist Celebrates His Second Gold Album
March 28, 2006 -- Joe Nichols’ CD, III has been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America, as announced today by Universal Records South’s Senior Partners Tim DuBois and Tony Brown. The distinction marks more than 500,000 in sales and is the artist’s second gold CD (Man With A Memory, Nichols’ debut CD was certified gold in 2003, and is nearing the platinum mark). Earlier this month, the lead single from III, “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off,” was certified gold for digital downloads in excess of 100,000. That single also topped the Country Singles Chart late last year and was named one of Rolling Stone Magazine’s Top 10 Country Singles of 2005.
“In my opinion, there is no better young singer making records today. In the hands of an artist like Joe Nichols, a really good country song becomes a great country record,” Brown said.
DuBois added, “The fact that this CD has been certified gold based on one single record’s airplay is testament to the strength of Joe Nichols and his music.”
The artist’s second single from III, titled “Size Matters (Someday),” is already a Top 20 hit, and rapidly climbing the charts. Nichols debuted on the country music scene four years ago with the critically acclaimed CD, Man With A Memory, a recording that earned him the CMA Horizon Award, the ACM Top New Male Vocalist honor, three Grammy nominations, two back-to-back multi week #1 singles and a gold album. He is currently on tour with Toby Keith.

Joe Nichols at the Grand Ole Opry on March 31, 2006
Joe Nichols a man with a Soul
Apr 03, 2006
I attended the Grand Ole Opry on Friday, March 31, 2006. It was my first visit to the Grand Ole Opry. My dream since I got into Joe's music has been to see him perform on my first visit. For this dream to actually come true was simple amazing!
Joe played in the last session and we were allowed to go up to the stage and take pictures of the performers. They let us stay kneeling in front of the stage through Joe's set.
It was a very beautiful experience for me. Joe has the most amazing voice that seems to magically wrap itself around my heart and soul. I was mesmerized by his strong baritone voice. I could see him standing in the left wing of the stage waiting to be announced, all smiles. Then Joe walked onto the stage. I could see the transformation take place as his soul began to take over leaving the man behind. I watched as he stepped into his element.
Joe started his set with "Size Matters" and ended with "Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off". The crowd went crazy for both of Joe's songs. I sat back and allowed Joe's deep baritone voice to touch my heart and soul. Listening and watching Joe, I was drawn into the emotional depth of his soul that he shares when performing his songs. How incredible beautiful and healing it was for me.
After Joe's performance, Jeannie Seely asked him for an update on his tour schedule and next album. Joe simply stated something to the effect, the Toby Keith tour would be starting up again at the end of July. They are doing smaller venues in between and looking for 11 great songs to put on the next album.
It was an incredible honor and piviledge to have been able to attend Joe's live performance at the Grand Ole Opry.

LOL... hook, line and sinker.. What's up with that??? He seems a little magical in his ability to do that. NOT trying to convince anyone he is of course, since we all know his charm doesn't work with me... only that incredible voice.. (ok..but its only a small fib so I know you'll overlook it)
Anyhow... lets add the links for Cmt to vote for Joe on the top 20 countdown. Rats... can't find.. I'll add it in a bit.
His interview on Blair... Aftermidnight was great. I could have done without the visual at the end of it though. NOT a topic I want to give any thought to since we're all trying to convince him we're fans of his music...NOT that gorgeous shell.
I like you for your mind or in this case your voice ....not your body.... ROFLMBO.. "yeah right, heard that one before".... sorry Joe.. Just poking a bit of fun since you were mean enough to mention the "T" word in tandem with kissing.
Anyhow... mentally shaking that out of my system.. here's the link to the interview. Its only available for 7 days, but you can load the download into your music player from this link.....

"Hot Dish".
Toby and Joe
Through the years, I've learned sidemen make the music and tell the truth. So I asked Joe Nichols' guitar player, a 12-year veteran named Brian Spradlin, "What's it like out there on the road opening shows for Toby Keith?"
A smile crossed his face as he replied, "Couldn't be better. Toby is nice as can be. He and his entire band and crew have treated us so special. When we get as big as Toby, I hope to see Joe and us have the same kind of people he's got."
Well, now, since we've set that straight, let's have a big hand for my friend, Toby Keith. And let's have another big hand for the only singer on the road who has chops equal to Merle Haggard and George Jones -- Joe Nichols!

Joe Nichols: Joe says this is one of the most personal interviews he has ever done. For the first time, he explains in-depth the difficult emotional bridge that spans his last album Revelation which does, in fact, reveal the heartbreak of his father's death and his struggle to be comfortable with his stardom....and his new album Joe Nichols III that reveals a more content man who is ready to find the joys of life. Mellow country closes out festival
Joe Nichols pleases the fans mining mix of hits and classics.
By BOB SAAR
for The Hawk Eye
Joe Nichols crooned Steamboat Days 2006 into history last night.
Singer Nichols and his band were mellow, smooth, tasty and downright just–right — if you like country music.
We love country music when it flows from the veins of Merle Haggard and Hank Williams, Jr.
Nichols, a 29–year–old relative newcomer to the big stage, did plenty of Haggard and did them well, including a flawless cover of "Mama Tried," complete with that same catch–in–the–voice mini–yodel that Merle has.
It seems odd somehow that a wholesome guy like Nichols would sing so many songs about beer, but that can't be helped when you're mining Haggard/Hank nuggets.
"I want to sing something with some good country family values," Nichols told the crowd as the band went into "Family Tradition" by Hank Williams, Jr.
"Tell me why do you drink?" Nichols sang.
The bevy of young girls thronging at the front of the VIP area screamed, but then, they screamed at everything Nichols sang, said and did.
He introed his own hit "She Only Smokes When She Drinks" by explaining that after getting dumped by a woman, it's good to process things by sitting down with pen and paper and "a lot of beer" so that you can write a song about it.
"It's not that fun, kids," Nichols admonished the youngsters crowding the VIP area.
The swarming girls screamed in return.
He has a voice that any man dreaming of the Grand Ole Opry would crave: Deep, smooth, just the right amount of sandpaper on the bottom end.
Joe Nichols sings way down there in the basement — he has one of those bass voices that can rattle windows and make beer shimmy in the cup.
The six–piece backup was a by–gosh real live country band, complete with steel guitar and two lead guitarists who could pick circles around most of the players who preceded them this week.
The band didn't just bash out track after track; instead, they sculpted the songs for Nichols, layering and texturing the verses and choruses, building suspense and releasing it.
Nichols' sidemen worked together as musicians rather than strutting together like rock stars.
Local country band South 61 opened things on the south stage. Singer Kurt Wooldridge was primed to play.
"This is one of the best lineups South 61 has ever had," Wooldridge said.
The weather was almost perfect, and incredibly, the mayflies skulked in the river once again, and the country faithful enjoyed an excellent Steamboat Days evening.
It's good when Steamboat Days closes out the week with a mellow night like this one.
~What a truly lovely review and now that Mr. Saar's has seen Joe live it was great to see that he also recognized Joe's awesome band. ~ Sara

Random Joe Nichols ~ Just A Thought
I can't wait until "I'll Wait For You" starts its air play in Canada. Ladies grab your heart. Our Mr. Nichols has a straight to the top NUMBER ONE hit with this song!!
Wonder what they'll do with the video? It would be too much to expect Joe will play the male lead in this one, but hopefully they'll get lots of that "furrowed" brow and Joemotion in it. Maybe they'll do it sort of like "She Only Smokes When She Drinks" with Joe as the narrator. Oh boy, that would be a tear jerker.
Any one need Kleenex?? We're going to need it
Dang what a beautiful song!! P.S. I love you too/ Sweetheart I'll Wait for You.
It was written by Harley Allen and Bill Anderson. (yup that Mr. Anderson)

First Georgia then Nashville....our Joe adventure....part 1
Another Joe Nichols Adventure
My friend Sara and I decided to go on another Joe adventure to Georgia and Nashville. We hadnt seen Joe since April 21st and 22nd in Harris MI. We traveled over 14 ½ hours on Saturday June 3, 2006 to Rossville GA. We were going to see Joe Nichols and his band on Sunday June 4, 2006 at the Lake Winnie fairgrounds for 2 shows.
Before the first show we met Marilyn and her daughters. Marilyn loves Joes music as much as we do and has joined us in promoting him for sometime now. It was a pleasure to meet her in person and it was like having a reunion with an old friend.
We were lucky enough to have great seats for both shows.but then again theres no bad seat when seeing Joe.
Joe Nichols was awesome as always and infact I believe he sounds better and better everytime I hear him.if thats at all possible. His voice is so rich and amazing and he pours his heart into every song. Joe and his band really know how to get the crowd involved and what a fun time had by all. We tend to meet people at every show that never really knew who Joe was but always leave a new fan and we always leave with more new friends.

Another Joe Nichols Adventure
Our next time seeing Joe Nichols was at the factory in Franklin Tennessee for his Fan Club Party on Tuesday June 6, 2006. Sara and I went with Marilyn and her daughters with Joexploders on board written on her van. Now theres a whole other story with the Joexploders van involving Marilyn and Joe on the highway going to Nashville from Georgia and Sara and I viewing the whole thing from my car just behind..anyway, lol.
Sara, Marilyn and I had once again been very fortunate with awesome seats infront of the stage second row of tables. We were met by many friends that weve been talking to on the boards, it was so nice to see them in person. Laurie, Fran, Heather, Diana, Debbie, Tamra, Annette and many more wonderful people. Thank you for a wonderful time and friendships. Joe performed many songs and took many requests and we also got to here some funny stories by fans and by Joe. He was just charming as always. One of the highlights of the evening for me was seeing Joe and Brian(his guitarist) perform Its Your Love a Tim McGraw and Faith Hill duet. Joe doing Tim and Brian doing Faith, they did a fantastic job!
Some of us fans collected money to have necklaces designed and made for Joe and his band members and Joes road manager Lonnie.thank you Nate. With a little bit of miscommunication we were unable to present it to everyone involved but we were able to give Joe and Lonnie theirs. The following evening we gave Scotty(his drummer) and Terry(his steel guitarist) theirs. They all loved them and that was the main thing.
We did get a M&G with Joe but I didnt get a picture with him this time(they had a photographer but I didnt like mine), Joe was so tired and I was near the end of the line(because of the gift we were giving him). I normally wouldnt ask for another autograph(have two) but I did for my daughter Jessica, she asked if I could. Joe was so sweet about it.Jessica and I thank you Joe.
It was a fabulous party, thank you Joe, the band and everyone else who was involved.

Another Joe Nichols Adventure
We were lucky enough to see Joe once more before heading home. We were lucky to get tickets to the Ryman Auditorium on Thursday June 8, 2006. Let me tell you what a treat this was indeed, walking in there you were in aw. The atmosphere was beautiful, the building was stunning. The stage, the balcony, the old pews, the memorabilia in glass casings was absolutely breathtaking. We were a little further back then previous shows but its not overly large in there, so there was not a bad seat to be had by any. All of the performances that evening were wonderful but I have to say seeing Joe on that stage was mesmerizing. His hauntingly traditional voice just seemed fitting for the Ryman. He performed Size Matters, Palm of My Hand by the late Buck Owens, his new single Ill Wait for You, and Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off. Joe and his band were absolutely spectacular and Im so honored to have been there to see him.
Our main reason for our trip was Joe Nichols and everything in between was a fortunate bonus. I have to say there is no other person I would have rather done this trip with then Sara. Sara I have been blessed to have found you my dear friend and traveling companion. We now also have Marilyn who has been added to our close friendship and we have Joe to thank for all.
Thank you Joe for touching so many of our lives.

Joe Nichols Tapes Jeff Foxworthy’s Upcoming CMT Television Series
Nashville, TN July 13, 2006 -- With song titles like “Size Matters (Someday)” and “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off,” music fans suspect that Joe Nichols has a pretty good sense of humor. If there are any remaining doubts out there, Nichols will dispel them once Jeff Foxworthy’s upcoming CMT comedy series hits the airwaves this fall. In addition to performing several of his hits on “Foxworthy’s Big Night Out,” Nichols was also invited to appear in one of the comedy sketches. The Universal South recording artist so impressed Foxworthy and team with his comedic skills, the sketch was expanded to give him even more lines, a fact Nichols appreciates.
[More:]
“When you’re on stage with a man as talented and downright funny as Jeff Foxworthy, well, you just can’t help but be funny yourself,” Nichols said of his experience. “I’m the kind of guy who likes to have a good time, and no joke is beneath me…just ask my band. They’ve heard ‘em all. When I found out I had a chance to not only sing on Jeff’s show, but also be a part of a comedy sketch, I jumped at the chance. I guess I should just admit it -- I’m a real ham at heart. Sing, dance, tell jokes—I can do it all. If Jeff decides he needs another comedian for his Blue Collar Comedy Tour, well, I’m his man!”
Nichols is back on the road singing for the remainder of the summer, and will rejoin Toby Keith’s tour in August. His current CD, III, was certified gold by the RIAA earlier this year. Foxworthy’s upcoming television series will premier this fall on CMT.

JOE PERFORMS LIVE ON CMT CANADA!
06/27/06, 05:58:29 pm, 24 words
Canadian Fans! Don't miss Joe on CMT Canada! Joe Nichols performs his biggest hits live on CMT Canada's Central Live on July 5th!
I finally managed to catch the show... frustrating missing it twice already and here is a quick over view of the conversation.
I finally had a chance to see the Cmt Live with Joe. It was terrific. He talked about his daughter and how proud of her he is. He was very cute and funny, but was suffering a bit from a cold and throat infection, but still he sounded great for being under the weather. He talked about Ashelyn being one of 4 girls in a hiphop group and that they won a competition (all age groups). He said she wasn't very impressed that with what he does and that she still hadn't bought any of his cd's, but she does enjoy being at shows with him because she loves being around people.
He was asked if he was still afraid to fly and he said that he was, even though he had gone up in a plane with a blue angel pilot and they broke the sound barrier. He mention "vomit" several times.... funny guy!!!
He also said that the best gift he'd ever received was from some girls from the fanclub who had purchased a brick at the new Cards stadium in St. Louis and dedicated it to his dad.
He mentioned that he's a terrible golfer.... likes to do things that get the "old men" on the course mad at him, like leaving beer cans all over the ground. He was joking (I think..lol), but he also said he's a terrible golfer, but its the only sport other than bowling (chuckled) that allows him to drink beer while he's "being an athlete".
Lets see... he said he had two albums that he is embarrassed to admit that he bought (when he was younger)...... Michael Jackson and the Village People.
He was asked about Brent Rowan and Joe said that he and Brent were a good fit and he looked forward to making another 20 albums with Brent producing. He said Brent was an awesome musician, writer and producer.
He mentioned his "personal trainer" several times and admitted that it wasn't as glamorous as it sounded. He was eating cabbage and working out and Wes would sit down with a slice of pizza and remind him about the 5 mile workout the next day. Wes wasn't with him in Toronto, so he'd eaten pizza a couple times since he'd arrived. I believe he mention "vomit" again in relation to working out.
He said that on days when he wasn't really feeling too great and had to perform, he would just think about his previous jobs (cable guy, moving furniture..etc.) and he'd say "Yeah!!! I love this ... and he'd immediately feel better and energized.
hmmm... if I remember anything else I'll add it, but I think other than the fact that he sang Size Matters, The Impossible, WAGGD, Brokenheartsville and Tequila... that pretty much covers it.

JOE NICHOLS BRAGS ON HIS DAUGHTER
06/21/06,
June 21, 2006--Joe Nichols tells X Radio he recently took his daughter to Disney World for a week. During that trip, Joe realized how good his little girl really is. "I'll tell you what, until I saw the other kids with their parents, I didn't really know how well I had it," he laughs. "I always think, 'You're being awful bratty,' and then I go to Disney World or Universal and I say, 'God, you're an angel! Thank goodness you're not like them.' She's a well behaved child and I'm proud of her."

Sangamon County Fair Featuring Joe Nichols
by Marilyn Wigglesworth
The Bellemy Brothers opened for featuring artist Joe Nichols at the Sangamon County Fair in New Berlin, IL on Saturday, June 17, 2006. This show was my eleventh Joe Nichols show since February 2006. I was lucky enough to get a place standing in the front row slightly off to the left of center stage. .Joe took the stage after an audio tape complied of clips from his favorite movies ended and his band broke into “Brokenheartsville”, a #1 single for the artist.
Nichols is a rising country artist that has developed a stage presence that draws audience participation as he shares not only his deep baritone voice, but his sense of humor and humorous facial expressions with his audience.
Nichols next song and current single to hit the charts from his album III was “Size Matters. Joe ended “Size Matters” yelling out to the audience, “Size Matters…isn’t that right ladies” following up his comment with a shocked open mouth expression that sends the crowd of lady fans into screams and cheers. Nichols continued his performance with “As Country As She Gets” also from the III album, “The Impossible” and” I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink” a song Nichols claims to be the first song he learned to sing at age 4. “Mom is so proud.” He chuckled.
Announcing Merle Haggard has been and continues to be a big influence Nichols sings his father’s favorite song by Haggard “Footlights”, following with “Mama Tried.” Nichols continues his show performing “Cool to Be A Fool” and “She Only Smokes When She Drinks.” He requests the audience hold up their lighters or cell phones and sway them in the air. Nichols laughs commenting, “This looks like a Verizon commercial.”
Then Joe sang “I’ll wait for you”, the newest single to be released from III. Tears streamed down my cheeks at the genuine emotion Joe expressed not only through his amazing voice but also through his facial expressions that conveyed deep feeling and sensitivity.
Next, Nichols added some upbeat sing-a-long songs, such as “Country Boys Can Survive,” “Good Ole Boys,” “Back in Black”, “Family Tradition,” and “What’s a Guy Gotta Do.” Joe’s performance kept the crowd on their feet and girls climbing the fence to get closer to this four time Grammy nominee who wore a Hank Williams Jr. concert jersey, torn jeans and weathered boots.
Joe closed his set with his newest #1 single “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off.” Nichols strolled to the far end of the right side of the stage as the fans begin to throw all sorts of under garments, clothes, shoes and even a dollar bill tied to a bra and shoe on the stage unbeknown to Nichols. As Joe turned to move to the other side of the stage, his expression seeing the stage littered with under garment was priceless. More bras and panties flew through the air at Joe as he walked across the stage. He stopped in front of me and extended his right hand waving for me to toss my usual red bra to him, which I did. He caught it and hung it from the neck of his guitar until the song ended. Then Joe left the stage but returned a few minutes later to appease the fans’ that were screams and chanting his name. He performed “Whiskey River,” “Long Haired Country Boy,” and closed with ‘Blues Man.”
Mr. Nichols deep baritone voice, sense of humor, good-looks and dedication to traditional country music continues to draw bigger crowds of fans to his shows. It has been an honor and a pleasure to watch the growth and progression of the Joe Nichols’ shows and performances through this first part of 2006. If Nichols continues to grow and develop his musical talent, performance and stage presence at his current rate, the rest of this year looks to be an exceptional and promising year for Joe and his fans.
Joe’s show set included the following songs
Brokenheartsville
Size Matters
As Country As She Gets
The Impossible
Stay here and drink
Footlights
Mama Tried
Cool to be a Fool
She only smokes when she drinks
I’ll wait for you
Country boys can survive
Good ole boys
Back in Black
Family Tradition
What’s a Guy Gotta Do
Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off
Encore set:
Whiskey River
Long Haired Country Boy

County fair kicks off today
By Scott Anderson
Wednesday July 26, 2006
UNION GROVE - The sights, sounds and smells of the Racine County Fair will once again descend upon the fairgrounds in Union Grove today, providing a sample of rural splendor for the next five summer days and nights.
For some, food is what the Racine County Fair is all about. There will be hamburgers, hot dogs, funnel cakes, pizza and delicious roasted sweet corn. There are also savory chocolate eclairs and homemade cream puffs made daily by the women of the Racine County Fair Bureau.
Hundreds of boys and girls will be at the fair, exhibiting thousands of animals and summer projects through 4-H, FFA and FHA, among other youth organizations.
The fair is a summertime reunion of sorts, a meeting place where young exhibitors can spend a week together living the memories that will in part define their youth.
Ann Voge of the Racine County UW-Extension said the livestock projects often draw the biggest crowds at the fair.
Each year, businesses and individuals buy more than $4 million worth of livestock that was raised by young people shown at county and state fairs across Wisconsin, she said.
Scott Gunderson, vice president of the Racine County Agriculture Society, said the fair has one of the largest animal exhibitions in the state.
This year marks the return of the County Fair Idol competition.
Last year, Jeff Vyvyan, 50, of Union Grove won the competition, earning a spot in the limelight to open for County Fair headliner Phil Vassar.
Vyvyan beat out five finalists ranging from 18-36 years old by playing a number of tunes he came to know in his 35-plus years of playing guitar.
Auditions for the second edition of the County Fair Idol competition were held on July 19 where judges narrowed a field of contestants to 12 finalists: Annie Griggs, West Allis; Kelly Brown, Racine; Theresa Bosch, Franksville; Tim Alton, Racine; Savannah Friend, Racine; Francesca Ricchio, Racine; Kris Cashmore, Racine; Megan Hammer, Wind Lake; Robyn Wilks, Kenosha; Louie Lueras Jr. , Racine; Blaine Perman, Union Grove; Lauren Fredrich, Kansasville.
The 12 finalists will perform today at 7 p.m.
Six finalists will be selected by audience vote to advance to the finals at 7 p.m. Friday.
The winner will receive $200 and be one of the opening acts for this year's headliner, country music star Joe Nichols.
Nichols will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday at the grandstand. Tickets are $5, in addition to paid fair admission, for the show located in the new
grandstand.
Fairest of the Fair Four young women will compete for the title of 2006 Racine County Fairest of the Fair.
The final judging will be held at 5 p.m. today, the winner receiving a lifetime membership to the Racine County Fair. The winner and first runner-up will also receive a scholarship. The winner will advance to compete at the state convention in Green Bay in January 2007.
This year's contestants are Rebecca Isaacson, 19; Nicole Krupkowski, 21; Kate Napientek, 18; and Katie Rice, 20.
Other attractions at this year's fair include helicopter rides, the Zoppe Family Circus, a host of tractor pulls and a new motocross exhibition team that performs daily at the fair.

Hits persist for homegrown country singer/songwriter
By SHANE HARRISON
The Atlanta Journal-Constitutio n
Published on: 07/27/2006
Country Music Hall of Famer Bill Anderson wanted to be a baseball
player.
"I found out at Avondale High School I wasn't quite good enough for
that," Anderson says, referring to his years growing up just outside
of Decatur. Instead, he's been a country hit maker, a network game-
show host, a soap opera star and one of country music's most
successful songwriters. And the Nashville resident will be back in
Georgia for a show at Lanierland Music Park on Saturday.
The University of Georgia graduate has been inducted into the
Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Georgia Music Hall of Fame,
the Georgia Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame, and the South
Carolina Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (he was born in
Columbia in 1937).
He also went Hollywood in the '70s playing host on a game show
called "The Better ***," sitting on celebrity panels on "Match Game"
and "Password Plus," and appearing in the soap opera "One Life to
Live."
"I think some of [the country music establishment] looked at me and
wondered why I was doing it," he says of that period. The memory
brings up a story that has him breaking up with laughter. "Waylon
Jennings made a comment one time in the paper that I thought was
pretty funny. Somebody was interviewing him, and I don't know how
the subject came up, but he said, 'There's Bill Anderson on
television hosting game shows. He ought to be staying in Nashville
learning how to sing.' I wrote him a letter, and I said, 'Don't you
make fun of my game shows on TV.' I said, 'I've seen some of the
movies you've made.' He took the letter and framed it and hung it on
his [office] wall ... the rest of his life."
But the songs are his greatest achievement. Anderson scored his
first hit as a songwriter in 1958 when Ray Price recorded "City
Lights," a tune he wrote at age 19. Forty-seven years later, he took
home the Country Music Association award for song of the year
for "Whiskey Lullaby," co-written by Jon Randall and recorded by two
of country's most respected contemporary artists, Brad Paisley and
Alison Krauss.
His recording career has included a Top 10 pop hit ("Still") and
country classics such as "The Tip of My Fingers" and "Mama Sang a
Song." His album "The Way I Feel," released in 2005, is the latest
in a catalog that includes more than 60 titles. But he's back to the
craft that first got him noticed.
"The main thing I'm really working on right now is my songwriting, "
he says. "That's what brought me to Nashville, and that's what's
been awful good to me the last few years."
Joseph Johnson, the Georgia Music Hall of Fame's curator of music
and popular culture, says Anderson's enthusiasm has helped keep his
writing strong.
"He's been able to adapt and change with the times and still remain
vital." He also credits Anderson's success to his gregarious
personality and grace. "He has that ability to keep adapting, but
yet remain himself."
Indeed, the seemingly tireless Anderson this week took time off from
a vacation to talk about his career and upcoming show. And he has
more songs ready to conquer the charts.
The first is "Give It Away" recorded by George Strait, a Top 20
country hit. The second is Joe Nichols' recording of "I'll Wait for
You." That tune "got extremely good reviews last week," Anderson
says. "Joe Nichols is coming off of two straight No. 1s, and I'm
hoping this will be the third one."
Anderson recently marked his own milestone. On July 15, he
celebrated his 45th anniversary as a member of the Grand Ole Opry,
part of a busy summer. He made his annual pilgrimage to the 10th
City Lights Festival, a fund-raiser he helped create in his adopted
hometown of Commerce (he spent part of his college years as a DJ at
a radio station in northeast Georgia). In June, he appeared at the
annual CMA Music Festival (formerly Fan Fair).
Sadly, it's been a hard summer, too. He lost his sister, Atlanta
rehabilitation nurse Mary Hoyt, to ovarian cancer in June.
He deserves this vacation, but it comes to an end this weekend.
Still, Anderson, who gained the nickname "Whisperin' Bill" for his
gentle voice and frequent spoken-word interludes, seems to be
looking forward to it.
What's so special about Lanierland?
"The crowd, No. 1, they're always really nice. But those people feed
you the best. We go everywhere around the country, of course, and
play all around the world, but the best food we get is at
Lanierland. I tell you what, it's worth going just for the food.
"It's a wonder anybody can go on the stage and sing up there after
they feed you."

Hanky Time With Joe Nichols
Joe Nichols was funny with "Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off" and "Size Matters ." Now, he’s about to show another side of his musical personality. Nichols’ next single is "I’ll Wait For You," and this one is a ballad. He says he’s "always loved a good ballad." It would be appropriate to bring a hanky to the first listen.
Nichols says, "It reminds you that love is strong and that it lasts, even beyond death." Nichols is touring throughout the summer, and he’ll join Toby Keith on August 11th on Keith’s "Big Throwdown Tour." Please support Joe by requesting this awesome song at your local country radio station.

I'll Wait For You ~ Written by B. Anderson/H. Allen
Sung by Joe Nichols
This is an awesome track by one of the best traditional country singers of our time. He can out sing many of the masters and definitely doesn't receive the recognition he so aptly deserves and has earned. Joe has a voice that will vibrate your heart and his performance with this wonderful ballad written by Bill Anderson and Harley Allen is full of Joemotion that will tug at your heart strings and remind you that love reigns eternal. Love It!! Absolutely beautifully sung. Hell'uva song.

Country singer Joe Nichols entertained the crowd almost as much with his breezy humor as with his songs Friday night at the Freeborn County Fair.
Nichols started the show with “Brokenheartsville,” a tongue-in-cheek song from his second album about a man who loses his girlfriend to a guy with a hot car. One of the many humorous lines in the song was, “Here's to the past, they can kiss my glass.”
It was clear from the outset that Nichols had come to perform, and that he meant to have a good time doing it. He often encouraged the crowd to clap and sing along with him and the rest of the band, and the crowd responded warmly.
But everyone was waiting for the song from the albume “III” that seemed to be everyone's favorite: “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off.”
“It's got humor in it. It's funny,” said Ron Roggeman, who traveled from Mason City, Iowa for the concert.
Larry Peterson of Forest City, Iowa, waited in line for an hour to get his seat right in front of the stage. He wanted to hear the song, too.
“I just like country music,” Peterson said.
Mara Hartzell, 15, came from Lime Springs, Iowa to see Nichols perform. She shared the same favorite song as weel, but she had another reason to see the concert.
“He's cute,” Hartzell said.
After “Brokenheartsville,” Nichols started up the quirky but sincere “Size Matters (Someday),” a tune from his most recent album about a woman who wants a man “with a big ol' heart, who can love her like nobody can, big ol' kisses that go on and on and never end, with a big ol' smile.”
“Ain't that right, girls?” Nichols asked the crowd near the end of the song, grinning at the joke and the cheers that came back.
Nichols took it down a notch for his next song, “As Country As She Gets,” the sad - and funny - story of a woman who doesn't like anything country but deals with it anyway because she likes a country guy.
The grandstand went quiet again as Nichols started “Impossible,” a number one single from his first album, “Man with a Memory.” People in the crowd took pictures with cameras and cell phones, and by the end of the song, others were wiping away tears as they heard “Unsinkable ships sink, unbreakable walls break, sometimes the things you think could never happen, happen just like that.”
Nichols grew up in Arkansas, listening to Merle Haggard and Hank Williams Jr. He inherited his love of country music from his grandfather, uncles and his truck driver father, giving him a genuine country background.
After the tearjerker “Impossible,” Nichols went back to his roots and sang Haggard's classic drinking song, “I Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink,” which Nichols said he'd learned at the age of 4.
By the time the band started up “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Come Off,” the crowd was ready for Nichols' wry humor.
“Yes! He drinks beer!” Nichols said of himself. “And that's not all, folks, I've been known to go out and drink a whiskey or two... or ten. But there's only one thing that makes my clothes fall off.”
The crowd went wild, laughing and cheering.

Joe immortilized in comics. You know you've arrived when your name or likeness shows up in comic strips and Joe Nichols is no acception.
Joe Nichols says there's nothing funny about honor
From free-lance journalist Beverly Keel:
You may have noticed in The Tennessean on Monday that a very
well-endowed female character in the comic strip "Nancy" was
wearing a Joe Nichols T-shirt. This is the second time a "Nancy"
character has promoted the handsome country singer. Joe met
"Nancy" creator Guy Gilchrist before a show Sunday in Hartford,
Conn., where Joe was playing with Toby Keith. Guy presented
Joe with the latest cartoon and then joined his family on the side
of the stage to watch Joe's set.
"There are several rites of passage, little things that happen
that allows you to sit back and say, 'OK, I've made it!' Joe says.
"And I can assure you of this: All the trophies in the world don't
equal one mention in a comic strip so far as my daughter is concerned.
The daily funnies are her 'War and Peace.'"•

Singer's soul finds sunnier country
By Janis Fontaine
Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

Joe Nichols is known for his upbeat, funny songs, like his most recent hits, Size Matters (Someday) and Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off.
"Everywhere we go, Tequila is our big signature song," Nichols said. And sometimes when they play the song, young ladies throw clothing on stage. "We get some bras and panties, those type of things, and it's funny. It's all about people having fun. If it inspires them to lose some clothing, so be it."
But tequila also does other things. In a story in last week's People magazine, Nichols, 29, admitted that for nearly three years he had been abusing alcohol and amphetamines almost every day. The story says Nichols "hit rock-bottom in January of 2005," but with the help and support of his manager, John Lytle, and a therapist back in Nashville, he quit drinking and drugs.
"Heavy to the negative is a fast train to nowhere," Nichols said by phone from Minnesota, before the magazine revelations hit. "It's a very terrible place to be. I was there for a while, but now with music and with friends, I can honestly say I've found a good place."
Nichols, who opens for Toby Keith at Sound Advice Amphitheatre on Friday, has long admitted his father's death in July 2002, just six days before Nichols' first album was released, contributed to one of the blackest times in his life. His father, Mike, a truck driver, was only 46 when he lost a long battle to a rare lung disease.
The day after the funeral, Nichols and his family drove from Arkansas to Nashville so Nichols could perform at the Grand Ole Opry. He sang his father's favorite song, the Merle Haggard classic Footlights. "It kinda just felt like the right thing to do," Nichols said. "And I never felt like it was something I couldn't do. My dad's been the biggest influence in my entire life. He taught me to play and taught me a love for singing."
No doubt it would have thrilled his father to see Nichols' first album, Man with a Memory, go gold. The album made such a strong showing that Nichols won both the ACM Top New Male Vocalist Award and the CMA's Horizon Award for best new artist.
The first single, The Impossible, made it to No. 3 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart. The follow-up, Brokenheartsville, earned Nichols his first No. 1.
"That was an incredible year," Nichols said. "It kicked off our career in a big flash. But when we came back down to reality and got back to music, when we stopped living for awards shows and got back in the studio, we saw the music is what matters."
In 2004, Nichols released Revelation, his second album, and while it was critically acclaimed, it was also criticized as too moody and emotional.
"It was kind of dark," Nichols admits, "but I'd have to be a complete liar if I told you that my life at the time was filled with light. As an artist, it was where my head was at and where my heart was at. I can't make a record that's all sunshine and flowers if my head is in the gutter."
Singing those sad songs, like Harley Allen's If Nobody Believed in You, has helped him heal, Nichols said. "The more you talk about it, the more it eases the pressure. Those type of songs are what I feel and they're like my therapy each night when I get to sing them."
When Nichols entered the studio to record his third CD, he'd been sober for more than eight months. He calls III his "blue skies and sunshine" album, and says, "It's the first time in the studio that I was able to say, 'No pressure. This is why I do music: because it's fun to me. And I'm here because I love doing it.'
"To me, there's a whole new meaning. Before I felt I had something to prove. Musically, to make the most traditional record out there or the deepest, darkest record out there. But now it's about being passionate about the music, and making the kind of record I want to make. All you can hope for is to make an album that'll make you proud."
Nichols was rejected 31 times before he got that chance. "Ignorance, stubbornness, whatever you want to call it, we had a lot of it," he said. "We pounded the streets, and eventually, we found someone who liked traditional country music and let us in the door. But I'd be lying if I told you that there was not a time I didn't think about going back to Arkansas and saying forget it. But I had good people around me that steered me clear of the negative thinking, and we lucked into a record deal."
If there's a formula for a good country song, Nichols says, it's believability. "I think if you write about the way the stars and moon line up, sometimes it's not reality for people who go to work at 9 o'clock and get off at 5. I think believability is the most important factor. Knowing what those people that get in their car and work hard every day want to hear."
That's where Toby Keith hits the mark, Nichols says. "I learned from Toby that it's about bringing it to the fans and making sure that they're happy. He makes sure every night he gives his show a hundred percent and that the fans leave with the thought that they've gotten their money's worth, and I think that's my goal now," he said. "With Toby, it's about the party and the action, about making you feel like you were at one hell of a party."
When the party's over, Nichols looks forward to getting back to Nashville to his 8-year-old daughter, Ashelyn. "I see her every minute I'm in town. From Monday through Thursday, I spend all my time with her. Anytime I'm not working I'm with her. She's got a little bit of an idea that Daddy has not got a normal job," he says with a laugh, "but I don't think it's a big part of her day. I don't think she gives it much thought. She's thinking about Barbie and Little Bratz."
No doubt his daughter is a grounding force in a very hectic, demanding business. And Nichols is working hard to avoid the highs and lows that come with the territory. "I do think life needs balance. I think if you can live life and have a positive outlook on life every day, and keep the negative at a minimum, I think you've got a good balance. That's what balance is to me."

Joe Nichols Has Big Hopes For Single
Singers reveals his own predicition
By Neil Haislop
NASHVILLE, TN Wednesday Sep.6.2006 /netmusiccountdown.com/ -- Joe Nichols says that of all the songs on his current album he thinks his new single, "I'll Wait For You," has potential to be very big.
"I think it was the right choice to come with "I'll Wait for You" for the single because it has the biggest chance to become a big song. It's got that potential to be a "Don't Take the Girl." Just one of those things like "Don't Take the Girl" put Tim McGraw over the hump after Indian Outlaw," Joe reasons. "I think 'I'll Wait for You' has that potential,' he adds.
Joe adds that he and his label felt it was time to release a good ballad.
"This is a really good one, it's a love song and I'm really proud of how the record came out. It'll kill you, of course, somebody dies in it, but it's good, it kinda has a good ending, an uplifting ending instead of where everybody's dead, you know," Joe explains with a grin."

Clinton to attend fundraisers for Beebe, McDaniel
Wednesday, Sep 6, 2006
Arkansas News Bureau
LITTLE ROCK - Former President Bill Clinton will be in Arkansas Thursday to attend fundraisers for the Democratic nominees for governor and attorney general.
Clinton is among the hosts for a $100-a-plate fish and frog legs dinner to raise money for Beebe's campaign scheduled for Thursday afternoon at Alltel Arena in North Little Rock, then will appear at a $1,000-a-ticket "Arkansas All-Star Celebration Gala" on Beebe's behalf Thursday night at the Statehouse Convention Center in Little Rock.
The gala will feature country music artists Joe Nichols and Jerry Jeff Walker.
Earlier Thursday, the former president and governor of Arkansas is to attend a benefit for attorney general candidate Dustin McDaniel of Jonesboro at the Little Rock home of Bill Clark, a former Clinton appointee to the Arkansas Highway Commission.
Clinton was governor of Arkansas for 12 years before being elected president in 1992.
The McDaniel fundraiser is limited to 35 people, who will pay $2,000 each to attend, McDaniel spokeswoman Melissa Moody said Monday.
McDaniel, a one-term state representative, faces Republican Gunner DeLay of Fort Smith, a former state senator, in the Nov. 7 general election.
Beebe, the state attorney general and former state senator, faces Republican Asa Hutchinson, a former congressman and undersecretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, in the general election.
Last week, President Bush headlined a fundraising luncheon for Hutchinson in Little Rock. The event, held at the home of former Arkansas Razorback and professional basketball player Joe Kleine, raised $400,000 for Hutchinson's campaign and $250,000 for the Republican Party of Arkansas.
