Who will be the Sean Paul, Justin Timberlake and the Darkness of 2004?

I'd love to see Kate Melua, Muse and British Sea Power build on their various levels of success during 2003. There's also the first releases from Pop Idol Michelle and Alistair Griffin to look forward to!

If The Rasmus released 'In The Shadows' here in the UK, I think it could be a potential no. 1 - after all, it's been no. 1 in nearly every European country. So my tip for 2004 would be The Rasmus.
Of course Michelle McManus winning Pop Idol 2003 is an obvious choice, but didn't everyone say that about Alex Parks from Fame Academy.
OK, you cannot compare Will Young's sales to David Sneddon's, but if the much hyped Alex Parks failed to reach no. 1, Michelle (in my opinion) has her work cut out. However, I do think her single 'All This Time' will be no. 1 for three/four weeks.
As for Alistair Griffin, he's changed the release of 'Bring It On' three times already - he'll probably postpone it again come next Monday. I do, however again, think that his songs are quite good - but reality TV (for some) does have its drawbacks.

Oooh, do Roxanne and Carolynne have record deals? Wow, i didnt know! I love both of them, i think Will Young will have a big year!

roxanne has reportedly sighned with sinon fuller and his 19 management-carolynne has still 2 sighn but has had many offers-hes gust written a new album 2 show producers and she is expecting 2 release a single somrtime next year!!!

also zoe birkett is still sighned with 19 management-shes said her and fuller have been working together on a few tracks and shel be releasing an album this year (treat me like a lady wont be on it) and she recently attended at 19 management party with the likes of gazza gatesa, will young and kelly clarkson!

BUT I SAW IN A PAPER A FEW MONTHS AGO THAT BOTH SARAH WHATMORE AND ZOE BIRKETT HAVE AN ALBUM RECORDED but only one of them will be able 2 get 2 release it! they both release singles and whoevers single charts higher gets the album released and the other gets dropped! i know probably no truth in it whatsoever! ;)

The Rasmus will appear in UK at:

23.01 Garage, London, [UK]
24.01 Rock City, Nottingham, [UK]

I predict that "In the shadows" is going to be released around April..

Great minds think alike! ;) I was going to write exactly that - The Rasmus are great, I'd defo buy In The Shadows if it was released here because it deserves the success. As do their other songs - like In My Life, First Day Of My Life, Still Standing, F-F-F-Falling, Madness... there are so many more.

Who else will be big? Acts like Katie Melua. S Club 8 could split and 2 members have a great solo career, whilst 2 other join together and flop like H & Claire... Victoria Beckham could actually have a number 1 (yeah right), but could this be a year where Pop Rock returns to the top and stuff like that? Possibly - especially with this new format stuff, downloads seem to be most popular with this genre.

I'd agree with most of the comments posted above.

DSQ/Hitstastic - who are the Rasmus and what type of music do they play? I've not heard of them before.

Michelle McManus will no doubt get to #1. The single is released at a weak time of year for sales, so competition will be limited. However, as has been proven, sustaining a career is the hard part and she really will have her work cut out if she is going to succeed. Roxanne and Carolynne seem to have brighter potential, but with the first Pop Idol, not everyone can have success.

I'd agree that certain bands like Blue and Atomic Kitten are now reaching the mature years of their careers.

To rmbob, The Rasmus are from Finland. They are a rock group who have released some fantastic (and catchy - always helps) songs in Europe in the last two years.
They're first major European release was 'F-F-F-Falling' which saw them crack Germany. I only know this because we used to have the old Sky with German channels - that's how I come across these type of artists. I also like Guano Apes and HIM who I also came across through Viva (German music TV station!!!).
Now, my two year old chart 'Hitstastic European Top 30' is online at:-

<http://www.totalmusic.tk>

Even though the old Sky doesn't work (the box went completely two years ago), I've used the internet instead to keep up with what's happening music wise outside the UK. So that's how I know about The Rasmus. Hope this information helps.

i'd like to see the Dixie Chicks get some recognition! They are brilliant
Also i love Patty Griffin, her music is amazing, maybe she'll breakthrough. I doubt it. Shame that. Lets hope rap doesn't take over our charts the way it has done in the States, that would be disappointing. And depressing. All sounds the same to me.

In 2004 Maria Willson will make it big and i can see Sarah Whatmore and Zoe Birkett will be sucessful i can also see Clay Aiken and Ruben Suddard making it over here. Amy studt will do well. The Dixie Chicks can hopefully do well. I can see Girls Aloud being the new Spice Girls. Blue will start to separate ways and i can see at least 3 of them going solo. blue have said they would like to try new things while there able to On another note i think that we will never hear of gary Jules again.

HI

Yes You're right F-f-f-falling was a great, i remember when i first heard to it i thought that band had the potential to make it big not only in Finland.
I tried to convinced my boss to play Falling at the radio but i couldn't, but now we are because they've released "In the shadows", which is a good song, which is also getting airplay in Mexico... so who know if the rasmus will do it good in America Latina in 2004...

I think Destiny's Child have a surprise for us next year (can't wait for that!!!). I think they'll have a huge year with a couple of number one singles and a huge album!
I think Avril Lavigne will have a great new album! Other people that I think will do well next year are Black Eyed Peas, Alex Parks, Jennifer Lopez, Eminem and Fatman Scoop.
Rachel Stevens is going to disappear next year as well!

My hopes for 2004:
-> new European imports that will probably top UK chart: The Rasmus (In The Shadows), In-Grid (Tu Es Foutu)
-> new albums from Garbage and Portishead that hopefully will chart high
-> I hope that following artists will flop: Destiny's Child, Avril Lavigne, Jennifer Lopez
-> some artists made very bad choices for 2004 singles: Basement Jaxx (why don't they release "Plug It In" or "Cish Cash"???), Kylie Minogue ("Red Blooded Woman" is very average track, why not "Sweet music"???), JC Chasez ("Some Girls" with ODB????) - I still hope that these artists will get some luck in 2004

Destiny's Child will NOT flop! And Avril Lavigne won't either! Jennifer Lopez is not my favourite but she will be successful next year!

InGrid“s Tu Es Foutu is so old, can“t believe it will be released in UK next year!!!
Anyways, I think next year Britney will flop, as she is not fresh anymore, nobody cares about her anymore, her days of “pop princess“ are over... Ones like Alicia Keys and Dido are selling much more then her, and will probably go on next year... I think Dido will be Top 10 in the albums chart most of the year, and hopefully Alicia will do well in the UK too... “Cause in US her sucess is guaranteed. Also, I think 2004 is the time to get rid of ones like Avril, Xtina, Britney... I mean, why buy this stuff while we have real artists making good music? Also J-Lo, her musical career doesn“t have much future, her last album performed horribly in the charts worldwide, if you consider the amount of publicity she has...

Couldn't agree more!!!

And it ("In The Shadows" )IS a good song. A little bit of Bon Jovi "(You Give Love A) Bad Name" or why not Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar (On Me)" - excellent!

It is a definite UK #1. "Tu es foutu", not sure, but surely it deserves the accolade!

The Rasmus would do even better in the U.S. (i.e. #1 for about two months or so).

And this from a country which is constantly disgracing itself in the Eurovulsion Contest... !

Whenever the single is released in either the UK or the US I shall be first in line with my £10 at Ladbrook's, for the single to make #1!!!

From the backrooms;

these should be successes in the UK, but since the language is "wrong" it won't happen.

Still - for those of you with open minds - give these a chance:

"Jį Sei Namorar" - Tribalistas (were at #1 in Brazil for about two months)

"Irgendwo Irgendwann" - Nena & Kim Wilde (still climbing in Austria, Switzerland)

"Dime" - Beth (Spain's entry this year's Eurovision)

Best regards,
Pee

Yeah, lets get rid of Jennifer Lopez once and for all! Her music was so boring on the last album, mindless garbage. Although, having said that, now she's chucked Ben maybe it could improve. I guess the proof will be in the pudding!

I'd like to see Alanis Morissette doing well with her new album, i think she is really good, and can't wait for her new album.

A bit dubious about a Destiny's Child album...

"Moi... Lolita" is one of the greatest songs in the new century thus far, but little known beyond France (and possibly Italy). Shame!

Yours is a mind I like.

Alex Tereshchenko

Alizee also well-known (at least *was* well-known in 2002? or was it 2001?) in Russia.

The Rasmus at # 1 in USA would be cool, but let“s be honest, they don“t have any chance... When was the last time you saw a rock song at # 1 in US? When was the last time you saw an european act in the Top 5? No artists have chances of doing well in their charts if they“re not "black music".

I have to agree with Joao. As much as I like The Rasmus, they will never hit no. 1 in the USA. The last rock act to top the Billboard chart was Nickelback with 'How You Remind Me' - that's two years ago this week.
Ever since USA started combining sales with airplay, the whole chart has become a joke with nearly every new US no. 1 being a black RnB act.
There's nothing wrong with 50 Cent, or Beyonce, or Ashanti, or Ja Rule, or B2K, or etc etc at no. 1, but when the styles are so similar, it gets boring.
Yet, rock acts seem to stay in the US chart for months without hitting the no. 1 spot (that'll be the airplay kicking in).
Regarding Alizee, 'Moi...Lolita' was released in the UK and reached no. 9 in February 2002.
Finally, wasn't In-Grid released in the UK early last summer (around May/June time???). I also think it was an English version 'Tu Es Foutu (You Promised Me)'. I'm not too sure - I know it hit the Australian top 10 around that time anyway!!!

#1 in the USA?
It's impossible..
Thanks to Trapt(their supportive band in their future shows in the USA)
they can hit #20 or maybe #15.

I hope that they are going to release "in the shadows" in the UK
before Will young or Gareth Gates release their singles, to be sure
that they hit #1.

DSQ
27 December 2003, 20:10
Gareth Gates won't have another number 1, and as long as they don't release the same week as a big contender then they'll be fine - should enjoy a long stint at the top (so 3 weeks into Michelle's release, could stay there for up to 10 weeks - The Ramsus 'In the Shadows' this is)

In Grid have no chance reaching the top, they'll probably enter around 35-40 with their song.

I hope Sarah Whatmore does well next year, last february i ordered her album but two weeks later i got a email telling me it got shelved! Too Bad! I hope susanne from pop idol gets a contract, she was my favourite in pop idol !
