ACOUSTIC OCEAN
Light Returning
(www.AcousticOceanMusic.com)
This is right-in-the-pocket new age music -- gentle, soothing, meditative. There is a lot going on if you concentrate -- guitars, harp, flute, piano, cello, sax, oceans sounds, bird-calls, bass, dulcimers and more. This recording was put together by a pair of former folksingers now living in Hawaii and teaching yoga and doing various forms of therapy. This music fits right into that lifestyle.
According to the CD package, the music is meant to “transport the listener on an inner journey and evoke a heightened awareness of the moment.” OK, that seems valid. I found the music very pleasant to listen to. The pieces are fairly long and when the gentle melody lines are repeated again and again within a composition, you might find yourself hoping for a little more variety. But to their credit, the group says they specifically created the music like this so that it mimics a chant or mantra, and works the same way to put the listener into a relaxed, different place like meditation or breathing exercises. The fact that these two musician therapists want the music to help you -- heal you, make you more healthy, straighten out your inner turmoil, and bring harmonic bliss to your soul -- is very cool. So check it out and see if it works for you. At the very least you can enjoy the dulcimers. We just don’t get enough dulcimer sounds in music today.
