New York, NY (Top40 Charts/ Green Light Go) Born with a name comprised of two (Ana and Elise) and made of many ethnicities (Mexican and Italian to name a couple), Analise
Nelson lives the many aspects of her life in hybridity. She grew up in Boulder, Colorado and was surrounded by her parents' diverse taste in music, which ranged from jazz to progressive rock to folk. Now she takes her love for 60's Brit and Surf Rock, nearly ten years performing in jazz ensembles, experience writing for orchestra at UC
Santa Barbara, and love for electronic pop and hopes to create music that is just as much of a hybrid as she is. Some old, some new... all her, bundled in a project called Anabot, where she is the songwriter, vocalist, keyboardist, and guitarist.
"I grew up with one ear on The
Beatles and the other on The Beach Boys,"
Nelson recalls. "Ultimately, I feel like I have much more of a British sensibility when it comes to pop melodies; a sort of musical expatriate. I'm more drawn to British artists like
Marina and the Diamonds and Clean Bandit. The difference is a big part of my heart still loves that West Coast sound, so you'll find I like to marry my British sensibilities with the reverb-infused California ethereal. I mean, I guess I couldn't have expected any different. I'm a Mex-Italian Californian with an English last name."
That fascination has resulted in Anabot's newest EP, Kiss Like A Knife, due out December 2, 2014.
About:
Resulting from a combination of "analog" and "robot", Anabot is the product of a dualism, of sorts. Crafted by Nelson, she calls her experiment a "pop time machine with a rock engine." Danceable yet driving, the end result is music that manages to transcend time itself. "As a musician in the digital age, I find myself torn between loving the warmth that can only come from analog recordings," states Nelson. "I find myself looking up to older bands like ELO, The Beach Boys, and The Who, but also being drawn to and fascinated by modern electronic music. Anabot is my way of engaging both sides simultaneously."
