CHARLIE WOOD
"No Repose"
(Available 3rd November 2014 - Perdido Records)

"I fell in love with this mans voice the moment I heard it. He is the essence of soul & blues" - Paloma Faith

Taken from the incredible forthcoming album "New Souvenirs" by the UK based, Memphis born singer-songwriter this stunning first single "No Repose" marks a milestone in the critically acclaimed pianist's career. Steeped in jazz roots the song crosses over to the main-stream in a style rarely achieved by anyone before. Lyrically mesmerising, musically masterful, and delivered with an effortless vocal that warms and touches the very soul. Once in a lifetime an artist of this calibre comes along. This is that moment.

Born and bred on the rich musical heritage of his hometown Memphis, Tennessee to musical parents (his Dad plays drums and his Mother piano), Charlie was drawn to the piano at just age 4, and when his Father introduced him to the music of the great Mississippi blues pianist/raconteur Mose Allison at age 12 there was no doubt where his future lay. Charlie went on to study classical piano and jazz, continuing to Tulane University, New Orleans and finishing up at Memphis State (now the University of Memphis). He has since gone on to perform with some of the biggest names in the genre.

At the tender age of 22 Charlie was given a hard and fast lesson in the rigours of 'the road' when he joined notorious bluesman Albert King on tour…..

"He was a force of nature, an amazing guy……It was tough. It was often very, very unpleasant, and I think anybody you ask who did it will say the same. People called it boot camp. But you certainly learned the realities of the road and how to make things work, how to economise and how to get from point to point and keep body and soul together, 'cause there often wasn't a lot of compensation. And you learned how to do a show, for sure."

Following on, Charlie landed a residency at King's Palace situated on Memphis's world famous Beale Street, attracting regular sit-ins from the likes of B.B. King, Georgie Fame, Joey DeFrancesco, George Coleman, Mulgrew Miller and Alvin Batiste. He has more recently performed alongside Robert Plant, Paloma Faith, Gregory Porter and Madeline Bell. He has also become recognised as a talented and original arranger with recent scores performed by the RTE Concert Orchestra, the Brodsky Quartet, the Royal Marine Band, the Back To Basie Bigband, and numerous others.

He has had the honour of having an official 'Charlie Wood Day' declared in his beloved Memphis and is soon to be the recipient of a Brass Note on Beale Street bearing his name, the music equivalent of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The album "New Souvenirs" is the first that Charlie has recorded in the UK where he now resides with his wife (and co-producer), renowned jazz vocalist Jacqui Dankworth, daughter of musician, composer and arranger Sir John Dankworth and singer Dame Cleo Laine. As he says himself "This is an emotional album that has come from within. I'm happier with it than I ever was with any of my previous work. I feel really good about the songwriting, both musically and lyrically."

This eclectic collection of songs reflect his own upbringing in Memphis, wearing their influences and stylings proudly, melded into a cohesive and confident album that cements Charlie's ever-burgeoning reputation.
