JAL In Oscar Contention In Two Categories
New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Official announcements for the upcoming OSCAR AWARDS have started coming in and there is reason to rejoice for India. Indian director, Girish Malik's national award winning film JAL has found a place in the Oscar contenders of 2014 in two categories so far. The film is selected to compete in the two most prestigious categories- BEST ORIGINAL SCORE 2014 and the BEST PICTURE OSCARS 2014 category. Apart from that the film's Screenplay has also been invited to the prestigious OSCAR LIBRARY for their permanent core collection.

Composers Sonu Nigam and Bickram Ghosh for JAL and Mr. AR Rahman for Kochadaiiyan are the only Indians to advance in the top 114 contenders for the best original score. The film is selected alongside path breaking films like 'Interstellar', 'Hunger Games' and '300-rise of an empire' which is a great honor in itself. The other Indian film short-listed for the Best Original score is 'Kochadaiiyaan' composed by the legendary AR Rahman who is also nominated for two more of his Hollywood projects, 'Million Dollar Arm' and '100 foot journey'.

Girish Malik who made his debut as a director with JAL tells us- "JAL has been shortlisted as one of the Oscar contenders in the mainstream BEST PICTURE category and not the BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE film category which means it will be competing with the Hollywood biggies to find a space for itself and hopefully get noticed on this stupendous platform. It was a tremendous struggle to make this film and I am happy and thankful that it's being noticed on the biggest platform for cinema"

The Producers of the film at Oneworld Films are thrilled- "To be considered itself in that space is a great achievement for a small, independent film like ours. We worked on a shoe string budget and worked with many challenges and handicaps. We are very excited to be contending in multiple categories."

JAL has earlier won many accolades nationally and internationally. It was the only Indian film to be selected IN COMPETITION at the prestigious BUSAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2013. It was also highly appreciated by the critics in India and internationally and had earlier this year won the NATIONAL AWARD FOR THE BEST VISUAL EFFECTS.

Produced by Oneworld Films Pvt. Ltd. in association with Clapstem productions and NFDC, the film's screenplay has been written by Girish Malik and Rakesh Mishra. The film stars Purab Kohli, Tannishtha Chatterjee, Kirti Kulhari, Mukul Dev, Saidah Jules and Ravi Gosain in the lead roles.
The Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 22, 2015, at the Dolby TheatreĀ® at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, and will be televised live.
