NEW YORK (Atlantic Records) - Acclaimed Seattle-based rock quartet Death Cab For Cutie has joined Atlantic Records via a long-term, worldwide deal. The band's current album, "TRANSATLANTICISM," along with their back catalog and an upcoming live EP - set for release in early spring '05, will stay on Barsuk Records. Future Death Cab For Cutie recordings will be released by Atlantic and distributed domestically via WEA and outside the U.S. via Warner Music International. Future DCFC albums will be released on vinyl domestically by Barsuk.

In announcing the signing, Atlantic Co-Chairman/COO Craig Kallman said: "Death Cab For Cutie is an extraordinary band which has only just begun to unlock their full potential. They create music that is utterly compelling, speaking with a truly original voice and revealing a brilliant musical vision. Josh Rosenfeld and everyone at Barsuk have done a fantastic job in nurturing the band and building their huge indie fanbase over the past six years. We are honored to be able to pick up the baton and join forces with Death Cab at this pivotal stage in their evolution. It is with great pleasure that I welcome Ben, Chris, Nick, and Jason into the Atlantic family."

Atlantic Chairman/CEO Jason Flom added: "Everyone here is thrilled to have Death Cab For Cutie on the label, and this marks a great moment in the growth of the new Atlantic. Our single most important goal is to provide a home for the cultivation of long-term career artists, to become real creative partners in their development. With the phenomenal groundwork already laid by the band and Barsuk, combined with Atlantic's resources and expertise, we are looking forward to many rewarding years together with this truly inspiring band."

Barsuk Records co-founder Josh Rosenfeld noted: "Working with Death Cab For Cutie has been a great experience for all of us at Barsuk.
In addition to their really tremendous musical talent, all four members of the band are exceptionally grounded, kind, honest, and hard-working. We're proud to count them as friends, we're gratified by the work we've done together with them, and we're happy that Atlantic has emerged with what turns out to be a uniquely workable situation for everyone involved. It's going to be really fun to see what exciting stuff happens next."

Death Cab For Cutie guitarist/producer Chris Walla stated: "Only a year ago, it seemed impossible that any major label could present us with a contract that we'd consider signing. Not only were we wary of leaving the comfortable situation we've had at Barsuk, but since Josh and the rest of Barsuk have been close friends of ours and have matched us hour-for-hour working for the success of the band, we'd never have made a move without their blessing. We're so excited that Atlantic came to us with everything we could have asked for. We're looking forward to continuing to do exactly what we already do, but with more resources to make the records that we've always wanted to make. Atlantic's willingness to support the way we do things in terms of marketing and creativity has been so exciting and, best of all, we've clicked personally with a core group of people at the company. We expect the transition will be a seamless one."

Death Cab For Cutie began in 1997 as a solo project from singer/guitarist Ben Gibbard, with the release of the independent cassette, "YOU CAN PLAY THESE SONGS WITH CHORDS." Inspired by its success, Gibbard formed a full-time band - including guitarist/keyboardist/producer Chris Walla (who played on the original cassette) and bassist Nick Harmer.
The band's debut album, "SOMETHING ABOUT AIRPLANES," was co-released by Barsuk Records and Elsinor Records in 1998, followed by the Barsuk releases "WE HAVE THE FACTS AND WE'RE VOTING YES" (2000), "THE PHOTO ALBUM" (2001), "THE STABILITY EP" (2002), and the '02 CD reissue of the 1997 cassette along with archival and single tracks from the band's early years.

"TRANSATLANTICISM," released in October 2003, marked the debut with the band of new drummer Jason McGerr (who had previously played with Nick Harmer in Eureka Farm). Death Cab For Cutie's most fully realized effort to date, it marked a major leap forward into new and adventurous musical territory. "TRANSATLANTICISM" has scanned over 225,000 copies in the U.S., more than double that of the band's next best-selling release.

The album was heralded with a slew of rave reviews. Spin graded it A-, proclaiming: "Death Cab have never made the truly great album that their best songs promised. Until now."
"TRANSATLANTICISM" was named one of the top ten albums of the year by The New York Times, which cited its "eleven impeccable songs." Blender dubbed it "consistently compelling," while Uncut called it "a record of rare beauty and poise," and Entertainment Weekly hailed, "Listen to Death Cab's latest, 'Transatlanticism,' and you'll find that the moody Seattleites have a penchant for morphing pop melodies into epic songs."

Death Cab For Cutie recently played six shows with Pearl Jam as part of the Vote for Change concert tour. The band wraps up a major cross-country headlining tour this week, following which they will take a short break and then begin work on their next album.
In addition, Death Cab's Ben Gibbard has been enjoying great success with his side project, The Postal Service, whose debut album, "GIVE UP," was released in early 2003. At the same time, Chris Walla has built a solid reputation as an innovative producer and engineer, having recorded albums by other acclaimed independent artists including the Decemberists, Hot Hot Heat, and Nada Surf, among others.
