"Christmas Deer Hunt" was written by Catfood Records owner Bob Trenchard, with music by Ed Ivey. Ed Ivey is a multi-instrumentalist who was nominated for a Grammy for a children's album in 2011. Besides performing in his own band, Ivey is the tuba player in a second line brass band. He also plays trumpet, guitar and bass and has been a well-known singer-songwriter for years in San Francisco and is an in-demand studio musician in the Bay Area. Ed has performed at Carnegie Hall, The Fillmore, Hollywood Bowl, AT&T Park and on the BBC.

Ivey assembled an all-star group of musicians for the recording which was made at the legendary Hyde St. Studios in San Francisco. The musicians are: Ed Ivey - vocals and guitar; Al Garth-fiddle (Loggins and Messina, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Poco, Kinky Friedman and Dan Fogelberg); Bobby Black - pedal steel guitar (Doug Sahm, Texas Tornados, Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen, Bill Monroe, Asleep At The Wheel, Tom Wait and Maria Muldaur);

and Chip Roland - piano (member of the group Cowboy in the '70s, toured with Doug Kershaw and was a member of the jam band Zero who toured with the Grateful Dead, Gov't Mule and Ramblin' Jack Elliott). Ed also brought in three young cats to play on the session: Andrew Kahrs - guitar; Blake Ritterman - drums; and Andrew Couttie - bass.

Ed Ivey grew up on a farm in Clint, Texas, located in West Texas near the Mexican border. He still goes back home over Christmas holidays and plays a benefit every year. His early influences growing up were country and Tex-Mex as his father is an accordion player. His young cousins are the Iveys - Arlen, Jessica and Jillian - who sing backing vocals on most of the albums released by Catfood Records. Ed Ivey played in pioneer El Paso punk band, Rhythm Pigs. Moving to San Francisco in the mid-'80s, Ivey and his band recorded five original albums and toured heavily in North America and Europe. When the band broke up, Ivey worked in Texas as newspaper reporter until moving back to San Francisco in 1992.

CHRISTMAS DEER HUNT LYRICS
Christmas Eve and it's starting to snow
Not looking for Bambi, don't want no doe
A Pint of bourbon in my coat, too cold for beer/ Gonna bag us a Christmas deer.
Billy Bob and me and Junior in the truck
Gonna shoot us a Christmas buck
Got on our camo, got guns in the rack/ Gonna tie one of the hood and throw one in the back
Chorus:
Christmas Deer, Christmas Deer,
that's what we want
What a better way to spend the day than a Christmas deer hunt
Christmas Deer, Christmas Deer,
that's what we want
We're on our way to spend the day on a Christmas deer hunt
Don't need no jingle bells, don't want no mistletoe/Not looking for Bambi
don't want no doe
Don't shoot Rudolph, don't want no bad luck
Me and the boys gonna bag a Christmas buck
If we get old Dasher in our sights/ Santa gonna need a replacement tonight
We're on our way to spend the day
on a Christmas deer hunt
(Bob Trenchard and Ed Ivey, Soxwings Music, ASCAP 2014)
