Afropunk Announces Solange As Brooklyn Headliner
New York, NY (Top40 Charts) The 2017 Brooklyn AFROPUNK taking place August 26th and 27th in Brooklyn's Commodore Barry Park have announced final lineup additions that include Solange and Jorja Smith to an already stellar lineup that includes the likes of Raphael Saadiq, Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals, Sampha, Thundercat, SZA, Kaytranada, Gary Clark Jr, Michael Kiwanuka, Soul II Soul and many more (full lineup below). Established as a world renowned festival with coverage from the likes of The New York Times, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork and others it's also known that there are many more events surrounding the festival aside from the festival itself. Today AFROPUNK has also announced its AFROPUNK After Dark events that include their annual Fancy Dress Ball, Afro Comedy, FAR OUT BLACK: An Evening of Afro-Futurist Short Films, The Rebel Soul Cypher and much more (full events list + descriptions below).

While at the festival, make sure to stop into the Spinthrift Market that showcases and celebrates the best of the AFROPUNK maker community. With 100+ DIY-minded craft vendors who sell an array of one-of-a-kind and bespoke jewelry, natural beauty products, apparel, housewares, books, prints, and more. Some of the vendors this year will include Hi Wildflower, Afrodesiac Worldwide and Dopecity. You can also find the Hair Village, a celebration of the culture and history that our hair represents through interactive activations: featuring Hair Tales a conversation project by Michaela Angela Davis, an experience of Braids & Baby Hair as Live Performance featuring master braider ANCESTRAL STRANDS & New Orleans premiere natural hair salon Baby Bangz. Festival goers can also try out a new style at the Macy Gray Braid Bar, sample products, see style demos, and get advice on all things kinks and curls.

AFROPUNK is bringing lifestyle sports back to the festival with its Battle For The Streets skate contest. The competition will include $5000 in prizes in 3 divisions (Age 12 & under, Age 13-16 and Age 17+), and a Sk8 jam on Sunday for ages 30+, a highest ollie contest and more.

Also on site is Bites&Beats an AFROPUNK curated food experience for everyone from vegans to paleo's featuring tastes from around the world that include: Excell Kingston Bakery, Cafe Habana, Madiba, Taste Of Africa, Sweet Chilli, Johns Juice, Try Vegan, Cachapas Y Mas, and many more.

AFROPUNK is a hotbed of creativity. This year the festival has raised the bar and will feature installations from photographer - Hassan Hajjaj, No More Black Targets an art collective working towards increasing knowledge of Gun violence led by Cypha, photo-based interactive installation from Oluseye, and three dimensional murals and sculptures from Dizmology in Art and Times exhibitions throughout the park. Additional on site exhibitions and installations will be featured on-site in partnership with The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

About The Metropolitan Museum of Art - The Met presents over 5,000 years of art from around the world for everyone to experience and enjoy. The Museum lives in three iconic sites in New York City-The Met Fifth Avenue, The Met Breuer, and The Met Cloisters. Millions of people also take part in The Met experience online.
Since it was founded in 1870, The Met has always aspired to be more than a treasury of rare and beautiful objects. Every day, art comes alive in the Museum's galleries and through its exhibitions and events, revealing both new ideas and unexpected connections across time and across cultures.
