New Slim Gaillard Collection, 'Groove Juice: The Norman Granz Recordings + More,' Available Now
New York, NY (Top40 Charts / Verve/UMe) Bulee "Slim" Gaillard was a master of groove, a multi-instrumentalist and multilingual singer, songwriter, and comedian, bouncing on the pulse of contemporary trends in music for nearly six decades. A new 2CD and digital Slim Gaillard collection titled Groove Juice: The Norman Granz Recordings + More is released today by Verve/UMe, featuring many of Gaillard's most thrilling and witty recordings, which continue to resonate across popular culture today. As the title suggests, the collection's tracks - including nine previously unreleased alternate takes - were produced by the legendary Verve Records founder Norman Granz. This release also celebrates the 100th anniversary of Granz's birth.

To Swing Era junkies, Gaillard is one half of the duo Slim and Slam, whose catchy ditties "The Flat Foot Floogie" and "Tutti Frutti" were wildly popular. To fans of bop and "modern" forms of jazz, he's the guy intruding hilariously on the cutting-edge genius of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. For the Beat Generation, he's the mysterious bongo-playing figure in Jack Kerouac's novel, On the Road, to whom "the whole world was one big orooni." In 21st century television his songs pepper the soundtrack of Pamela Adlon's FX series, "Better Things." And to kids of all ages, Slim is the guy who created the original "Down By the Station," often heard in "Thomas the Tank Engine," and the perennial favorite, "Potato Chips."

"If you're looking for a succinct history of all the different musical trends flooding the airwaves in the decade before rock 'n' roll took shape, look no further than this compilation," writes '' co-producer Ricky Riccardi in his liner notes essay for the new collection. "Swing, bop, calypsos, R&B, proto-rock, strings, Latin rhythms, ballads, country and western, mambos, standards, novelties, bongos, Billy Eckstine, Yma Sumac, children's singalongsā€¦ it's all here, it's hilarious, and it swings."
