New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Rachel Eckroth will release When It Falls on October 19 and today premieres the video for the lone cover on the record, David Bowie's "Love Is Lost". The Derek A Welte video debuted this morning at BlackBook, who lauded the, "stunningly realized version and enigmatic accompanying video."
Eckroth's connection to Bowie on this new LP is a full circle, with Rachel initially starting to write the record shortly after the death of both Bowie and her own father, and co-production on the record by Bowie's Blackstar, bassist Tim Lefebvre - who also happens to be Eckroth's husband.
"The idea to cover 'Love Is Lost' came from a period in time when Tim and I were spinning a lot of Bowie on the turntable at home - not long after Bowie's death, and the release of Blackstar, which Tim played bass on," notes Eckroth. "In an attempt to capture some of the original production elements, we kept the odd harmonies in the guitar part and the thick harmonies of the background vocals. We put together a choir of six people to achieve this - Sy Smith, Carlos Ricketts, Mark Rivers, JJ Appleton and Tim and I.
"Tim suggested an homage to Bowie's long time pianist, Mike Garson. In the breakdown before the bridge, I play some Garson-esque free jazz phrases on piano, sort of leading the band into a chaotic meltdown."
