Rua das Pretas is a weekly international gathering of friends, wine and song, blending bossa, folk, jazz and conversation to an audience of fellow artists, tourists and gypsies. Based in Portugal and the brainchild of Brazilian musician Pierre Aderne, Rua das Pretas is a trip back in time, an experience that hearkens to another age and a different lifestyle. Aderne traces its lineage to the old salon era, or bossa nova gatherings in the 1960s, where music is just one of the many ingredients that make each evening unique, along with friends, storytelling, wine, travel, food, a blending of cultures and more.

The eclectic troupe will release 'The Wine Album' on November 14th, and an EPK about the project is here: https://youtu.be/4Lu9pMlCXwE

Musician/collaborator Brian Cullman describes Rua das Pretas as a "Portuguese Buena Vista Social Club," and reminiscent of the Slow Food Movement - he feels it has offered a new home to disenfranchised musicians since its inception in 2017: "I was exploring the idea that musicians who have moved beyond the warmth of clubs and salon performances - people like Caetano Veloso, Madeleine, Melody Gardot, Vinicius Cantuaria, etc - seem to love the idea of being a part of this tribe and see it as a traveling circus, a bit like The Rolling Thunder Revue. Especially as they can be a part of the fun without having to carry the show."

The new album is an extension of these communal gatherings. It was recorded in NYC and Lisbon and produced by Grammy winner Hector Castillo (David Bowie, Lou Reed, Bjork, Brazilian Girls, Beck). The Wine Album is a collaboration of artists from Portugal, Brazil, the United States and France, all invited by Pierre Aderne. Participants include Brian Cullman, Tanner Walle, Jesse Harris, Gabrielle Hartmann, João Barradas, Isabel Anjo, Maria Inês Paris among many others. Songs are performed in English and Portuguese, with highlights such as "Me & You", "Vinho do Porto", "Fado a Boire" and more. Apple Music France selected "Me & You" as a 'Pickup of the Week' upon its release this week.

Aderne and Cullman circle back to a few key points about Rus das Pretas: 1) The group of bohemian collaborators is like a tribe of roaming artists from the past, taking their music from the living room, to a café of 100 people, to ultimately thousands of people in different countries. 2) They welcome the disenfranchised, including musicians pushed away from the bigger stage due to age. 3) The salon environment offers more of a one-on-one connection to the audience, and the shared food and wine (and lack of mics and amplifiers,) add to the sense of intimacy. 4) Many of the musician participants in Rua das Pretas do so because for them it is a 'return' to their roots and how they began...on the couch, performing as their friends and family drank and ate and listened with attention and care (and not staring at their cellphones).

In a unique regional partnership, Aderne has joined with friend and fellow music lover, famed Portuguese wine producer Dirk Niepoort, to make 'The Wine Album' available in wine cellars and wine bars. Aderne comments, "These are songs born out of wine and love. We all lived and cooked and sang and played together for two weeks in Greenwich Village in New York, and wine fueled our inspiration for this album!" With music distribution a challenge, and Rua das Pretas not yet a household name, Aderne and Niepoort got creative: "With music stores on the decline, we wanted a unique way for listeners to find this album, and Niepoort Wines not only made four different wines to partner with Rua das Pretas, but we came up with the idea to make the album (on vinyl and CD) available directly to wine connoisseurs at cellars and bars. And we may even put download codes on the corks!"

Upcoming Rua das Pretas live gatherings include Lisbon, Berlin, Paris, Madrid, Porto and London, with additional dates to be announced soon. New York City and Tokyo events are in the planning stages for 2019. Keep up-to-date on live events, here: https://www.ruadaspretas.com

More information about Rua das Pretas, from their website:
Where Bueno Vista Social Club meets Tropicália, Rua das Pretas is a celebration and exploration of Lusophone culture past, present and future: from the sighs of fado and the pleasures of samba to the back streets of flamenco and blues. It's a music that is passed from hand to hand amongst friends and fellow artists, kept alive by the holy communion of song and story. Sometimes whispered, sometimes sung, and always in motion. Since 2017, Pierre Aderne has brought the gathering from his living room in Lisbon, where artists such as Caetano, Gilberto Gil, Melody Gardot, Antonio Zambujo and Ana Moura used to attend, to a weekly Rua das Pretas cirque in Lisbon. In the past year over 140 world music artists invited by Pierre to the gathering and over 4.000 people from around the world show up the those Saturday revelry. 2019 will include stops in Paris, London, Berlin, New York City and Tokyo. Past guests included Tito Paris, Anna Maria Jopek, Pedro Miranda, Pedro Luis, Joana Amendoeira, Joao Barradas, Walter Areia, Jesse Harris, Brian Cullman, Tanner Walle, Gabrielle Hartmann, Fred Martins, Liz Rosa, Camila Masiso, Nilson Dourado, Diana Vilarinho, Liliana Macedo, Philippe Baden Powell, Didier Sustrac, David Linx, Joana Almeida, among many, many others. On November 14th, the world music gathering known as Rua das Pretas will release its first album, The Wine Album. The Wine Album is a collection of wine love songs, born from a partnership between Brazilian singer/songwriter Pierre Aderne and Portuguese winemaker Dirk Niepoort. The album will be distributed in conjunction with the release of an exclusive cuvée produced by Niepoort Wines.

Perhaps founder Pierre Aderne says it best - on nights of Rua Das Pretas, he shares his dream with the gathering: "Lisbon has become the capital of Portuguese-language music. Musicians from Brazil, from the bossa and samba of Rio to the northeast of Ciranda, Frevo, Baião, artists from Cabo Verde, Guiné Bissau, Angola, Moçambique, Portugal, not only from Fado, but cantes from Alentejo, folk music...now I have the feeling that putting all these ingredients inside this big cultural pan, we are witnessing the birth of a new musical accent. If we skip from now to the future, in 10 years we will look back and say: 2018 was when all this began to be born. I have the feeling that in a couple years it will be more important to realize that the song is sung in Portuguese language, than to want to know immediately which country that music comes from."
