Single reviews released 14 July 2003

Gillingham, Kent, UK (By Mikey: martin.grech@btinternet.com)

RECORD OF THE WEEK

Benny Benassi presents The Biz - Satisfaction After the phenomenal success of DJ Tomcraft's massive 'Loneliness', Data Recordings return on July 28th with a record that's already shaping up nicely to be the dance crossover hit of the summer. Receiving regular spins by everyone from Roger Sanchez and Fatboy Slim to Judge Jules and Fergie, this electro-tinted trance house monster really does defy categorisation and, in the words of the Fatboy himself, is already looking like this year's Azzido Da Bass'. Don't miss!

HOT SHOT RECORD

Appleton - Everything Eventually Having already hit the UK's Top 5 with both their last singles ('Don't Worry' and 'Fantasy'), sibling duo Appleton return this week with 'Everything Eventually', a single that's arguably one of their finest. A cool, laidback summer groover, it not only finds the sisters at their singing best to date, but also proves that they're so much more than just flash-in-the-pan pop starlets. It also comes with the brilliant video, a dance remix from Dutch wizz Sander Kleinenberg and a brand new track in the shape of 'I'm Your Angel'

The Cardigans - You're The Storm The follow-up to their sublime comeback 'For What It's Worth', 'You're The Storm' is also arguably one of the best singles from the Cardigans' fifth studio album. A beautifully uplifting slice of haunting pop, it's quite possibly one of the band's finest moments to-date, and shows that they're continuing to grow as the years go by.

The Coral - Pass It On They've been away for a while, but on the evidence of 'Pass It On', it looks like business as usual for Scouse wonders The Coral. Sounding like a natural continuation of what comes innately to The Coral, it extracts the finest nuggets of everyman wisdom and coats them in the kind of irresistible tap and twang which has become the band's signature. Oh, and it also serves as a perfect taster for the forthcoming 'Magic & Medicine' album, which is already promising to exceed expectations.

D- Side - Invisible Having set out their stall on their incredibly infectious debut, 'Speechless', Irish quintet D Side return this week with 'Invisible', a single that's only gonna confirm their status as pretenders to the UK's pop crown. Already huge on TV stations like The Box, and generating a massive following from pop fans everywhere, the catchy and uplifting pop stomp of 'Invisible' shouldn't do the lads' cause any harm whatsoever.

Intenso Project ft. Laura Jaye - Your Music 'Your Music' has got summer written all over it! A quality dance tune that gets down and isn't ashamed to shake its ass, this collaboration between Ben (Phats & Small) and the luscious Laura Jaye is already looking like it could be one of the hidden gems to emerge from this summer's dance madness. Whilst the crisp beats, upbeat vocals and 80's tinged electro hook of the original is perfectly complimented by some cool remixes.

Jane's Addiction - Just Because They may have been away from the rock scene for the last twelve years, but on the evidence of 'Just Because' it hasn't dampened any of Jane's Addiction's fire. A raucous no-nonsense rock anthem that sees the legendary band getting back to their best, 'Just Because' is also joined, on each format, but a live version of 'Suffer Some'. Guaranteed to please Jane's Addiction's massive fan base, 'Just Because' is also a perfect intro to one of the rock scene's most notorious bands. Both formats are also deleted on the day of release - so be quick!

Ian McCulloch - Love In Veins A splendidly uplifting slice of pure, unadulterated pop, 'Love In Veins' is the new single to come from Echo & The Bunnymen frontman Ian McCulloch's latest solo album, 'Slideling'. Arguably one of the album's finest, the riff-heavy original version is also joined by Mac's impressive version of David Bowie's 'The Prettiest Star' and the beautifully minimalistic 'Arthur (Prague)'. He continues to get better and better!

Cerys Matthews - Only A Fool The debut single from her highly rated solo debut album, 'Cockahoop', 'Caught In The Middle' also marks a real departure in sound and style for the former Catatonia front woman. A stunning self-penned track, recorded (as was the rest of the album) in Whites Creek, Nashville with producer Bucky Baxter (best known as steel guitarist for Bob Dylan, Ryan Adams and Steve Earle); it marks an inspired change of direction that's obviously been marked by marriage, impending motherhood and the lure of America's Deep South.

Polyphonic Spree - Soldier Girl A 23 piece choral symphonic pop band formed in Dallas, Texas on July 15th 2000, the Polyphonic Spree is built around the musical vision of one man, Tim DeLaughter. Constantly evolving and adding new members as that vision expands, 'Soldier Girl' is arguably one of the band's best, and here it's re-released with a whole host of mixes and bonus tracks. An insanely uplifting, sun-drenched pop noise which mixes the sound of the West Coast circa 1968, Mercury Rev at their most majestic and even E.L.O, 'Soldier Girl' is a stunning single from a band whose sound was just made for the summer.

Super Furry Animals - Golden Retriever This song is two and a half minutes long, and it has time to fit in nearly 10 seconds of feedback at the end, so you might think there is not a lot here. Wrong. The Welsh wizards manage to cram in acoustic guitars, pianos, the fuzzy bass that helped define them and a distorted catchy chorus. The golden retriever in question refers to a woman who will "lead you blindly down every dark alley / then she'll bleed you dry". Some might say it's a little too Radio 1 friendly, maybe. No doubt the new album, Phantom Power, will hold all manner of electronic and genre-crossing tracks that keep this band so fresh. I, and countless others, can't wait.

Tyrese - How You Gonna Act Like That Californian native Tyrese has remained in the limelight since he captured the attention of the masses in the now famous Coca-Cola TV commercial that helped propel him to super stardom. Now a successful model and actor (he can currently be seen in '2 Fast 2 Furious'), he also, when he finds the time anyway, can turn his hand to singing, as he does here on the brilliant 'How You Gonna Act Like That?' Already massive on all the best urban dancefloors,

Yomanda Paul Masterson returns in his Yomanda guise with another strong dancefloor botherer that's looking like it could actually eclipse 'Synth & Strings', undoubtedly his biggest hit to-date. A pounding hands-in-the-air trance anthem, the uplifting sunshine stoked original is also joined by a wealth of top drawer remixes from Hi-Gate (aka Masterson and cohort Judge Jules), Voodoo & Serano and Frank T.R.A.X vs. O.R.G.A.N, guaranteeing maximum dancefloor exposure. A dead cert to be huge this summer!

Another week with such great information! I hav enotice that on Octomber is going to be released REM's "Bad Day". Why so far? They were here at UK last week, what is happening with their UK label?
JJ2003-07-12 13:04
From where does this site compile it's release date section? Any other web sites with this kind of info?
Guy2003-07-12 13:17
What is TBA?

(Will Young - TBA
Louise - TBA
Westlife - TBA)
Asser2003-07-12 15:36
JJ,
it is unique info and this kind of info isn't common in any other site that I have visit. Every week Mikey gives us the release list schedule, a great piece of work. If you are an american as I am, then you learn many things about the European and UK music.
TBA? I suppose that it is relate with non-titled yet?
Thanks Martin, greetings from LA :)
DJ Dan2003-07-12 15:52
TBA stands for To be Announced.

Whats gonna happen about Craig Davids Spannish the videos out now?

Mis Teeq r not releasing Crossroads anymore and liberty X are back on the release schedule probably as it went down well at Party in the Park.

Is speedways genie in a bottle a cover of Christinas?
Guy2003-07-13 05:07
Ahh ok, thnx!

And yes, the 'Spanish' video is already being played in MTV
Mikey2003-07-13 06:00
Wow! Thanks for the input guys, sorry I could not reply earlier, I was down Hyde Park last nite watching Shania performing she was absolutely, out of this world, I am compiling a review on the concert to go up on the website later, hopefully by teatime tonite.

There's quite a few adjustments in this weeks single lists and a few surprises and DJ Dan yes you are correct Genie In A Bottle is a cover of Christina Aguilera. Speedway is a new band from Scotland they been getting great reviews, keep an eye on this band they gonna be huge. Gene In A Bottle is there debut hit.

Apparently there is no news yet on Travis new material before anyone asks.

And finally I notice an error in my Single Reviews regarding Yomanda's Single there is no single title. The title of the single is 'You're Free@.
feldman2003-07-13 16:27
Travis have a single out 8th Sept according to teletext and an album 22nd Sept called Twelve Memories

Also Muse are releasing a single called Running Out Of Time 1st Sept and an album called Absolution on the 22nd, and Starsailor are now releasing Silence Is Easy (the title track from the album) instead of 4 To The Floor
JJ2003-07-14 13:42
Mikey

I am curious about how you compile the release date schedule. Where else can I access this kind of information. Are you also given an indication of how well the song is expected to sell???

on the 1st of septembr i wonder who's gonna be number 1, Christina, Big Brovaz, Dido, Rachel Stevens, Linkin Park, Liberty X or Justin Timberlake from the week before, looks very risky, myslef i've got christina Aguilera's album and her song alright, i think she sholud release infactuataion, and i've got big brovaz album and that's quite a good one again i think they should release gott get, dido has been on the news with her new song so that's looking good, linkin park has little chance though, but still a chance, Liberty X did exellent on party in the park and i like that song too, Justin's song is also a contender
Hitstastic2003-07-15 13:44
Hiya!!!
Here's my prediction for this Sunday's UK Top 10 (20/07/03):-

01) 01. Beyonce feat. Jay-Z
ne) 02. Benny Benassi
03) 03. Pink feat. William Orbit
05) 04. Evanescence
ne) 05. The Coral
07) 06. Wayne Wonder
04) 07. Javine
02) 08. Madonna
ne) 09. Appleton
ne) 10. D-Side - Invisible

Personally, I think the sales between Beyonce and Benny Benassi will be very close.
