"This historic premiere marks a nationwide effort to reach out to the Latino community and encourage their participation in the national bone marrow registry to help save lives," said Salvador Trevino, CEO of Santa Fe Communications. "City of Hope is grateful for the support from Universal Music and BMI Publishing, event sponsors and the talented Latino music artists for their commitment to the fight against cancer."

"We're excited for the opportunity to help build awareness and support for Latino patients in need of bone marrow matches," said Scott Loyola, associate vice president, City of Hope. "Our hope is to be able to save more lives by quickly finding a match so that patients at City of Hope can receive life-saving transplants."

Celebrities will attend "Fairs of Hope," a month-long tour, held at supermarkets in key Latino areas including Vons, Albertson's and Food 4 Less. Every Friday through Sunday during August, these "La Gota de la Vida" ambassadors will encourage the Latino community in Los Angeles to register as donors with the National Marrow Donor Program.

City of Hope is a pioneer in bone marrow transplantation (BMT) and has performed nearly 10,000 BMT and stem cell transplantations. The institution operates one of the largest, most successful BMT programs in the world. In 2010, more than 137,000 new cases of blood-related cancers will be diagnosed in the U.S. Only 30 to 40 percent of patients who need bone marrow transplantation will find a match within their family, while others will be directed to the National Marrow Donor Registry to find an unrelated match. Currently, there is a need for more Latino donors in the National Marrow Donor Program.

Each year, more than 1.6 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed in the U.S. City of Hope has the largest islet cell isolation, distribution and transplantation center in the western U.S. The National Institutes of Health-funded Southern California Islet Cell Resource Center is one of only seven islet cell resource centers in the nation.
