ST. LOUIS, MI. (Gary James Meritt PR/ www.songwritingcontest.co.uk) - Gary James Meritt has been selected as a runner up in the 2004 United Kingdom Songwriting Contest with his instrumental composition titled 'The Dead Church'. There were over 3200 total entries for the 2004 competition and around 300 were in the Instrumental Category. Sources from the contest have informed Gary that he was 'very close' to being named the winner for the Instrumental Category. This is only his second entry in a recognized songwriting contest and has proven to be successful.

Meritt's composition includes three movements, but only the first movement was submitted since contest rules limit the length of work. The first & third movements are fairly short, but the second movement is more lengthy. The movement of 'The Dead Church' which was submitted is a short three-minute piece with two distinct segments. The first section of the composition is pleasant and flowing, while the concluding section is tumultuous and commanding.

Intriguing new markets for Meritt's style of instrumental music are being explored. Mr. Meritt says that the success of his submission "is sure to mark a turning point in the music of today".

About Gary James Meritt
Gary James Meritt started his career as a composer in the late 1980's. Gary's music can best be categorized in the domain of Film Scores. Gary has been laboring for many years developing a concept in conjunction with his compositions. The first competition he entered was held by the BMI Foundation and called the 'Pete Carpenter Fellowship'. Meritt fell just short with his submission due to limited resources. The winners of the 'Pete Carpenter Fellowship' are given the opportunity to work with the eminent composer Mike Post at his studio in Los Angeles. Mike Post is a composer of themes from such TV shows as NYPD Blue, L.A. Law, and Law and Order. Even though Gary was not selected as a finalist, he did receive a telephone call from Mr. Post after the contest stating that his composition was a worthy effort but was not what they were looking for. A few years later, Gary was laid off as a programmer. He then devoted his time to his composing and regrouped to hire consultants and lawyers to assist him in developing his work to enter in the UK Contest. Mr. Meritt has a very unique & distinct style of writing. He also has a peculiar way of looking at the world with his music and ideas. While writing his unique compositions through the years, he has struggled with many medical issues but has always fought back to flourish. Gary has even started his own business, named 'Creative Composition', through which he provides lessons on composing. Now, with some recognition, Mr. Meritt is extensively searching for someone in the Film industry that wishes to work with him to further develop the concept that he has in conjunction with his compositions. Since this concept has never been done before, it is sure to be very profitable while remaining sophisticated and adhering to the utmost highest standards.
