DETROIT (Top40 Charts) - Fast-rising garage rock duo White Stripes was the big winner at this year's Detroit Music Awards on Friday (April 19) at the city's State Theatre. The group won the outstanding national album trophy for its 2001 release White Blood Cells, while the track "Hotel Yorba" was named outstanding national single.

Late Motown legend Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" landed the outstanding compilation/reissue prize, while Sponge frontman Vinnie Dombroski--who performed at the show--took home the outstanding country writer award for his side project, the Orbitsuns.

Electronic majordomo Carl Craig, a co-founder of the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, took home four trophies, including outstanding electronic record (Designer Music: The Remixes, Vol. 1), outstanding electronic act, outstanding electronic DJ, and outstanding electronic producer.

Bobby East, currently playing bass in Kid Rock's Twisted Brown Trucker band, was named outstanding rock instrumentalist, while Chris Codish of the Detroit band Brothers Groove--which made headlines recently for its jams with Blues Traveler's John Popper and *NSYNC's J.C. Chasez--won four trophies in the blues and urban categories.

Besides Dombroski, performers at the show included rapper and Eminem pal Royce Da 5' 9"--whose Columbia Records debut album Rock City has been delayed until summer or fall release--and the Faggs, a trio that includes former members of Sponge and Hoarse.
