New York, NY. (Top40 Charts/ Shore Fire Media) - In September, clarinetist/saxophonist/band leader Anat Cohen will release 'Notes From The Village' on her own Anzic Records label. Recorded this spring at Avatar studios in NYC, the album builds on Cohen's acclaimed 2007 releases 'Noir' and 'Poetica' capturing the thrilling energy of her live shows, and proving her to be an artistically adventurous writer and performer. It finds her helming a quartet of some of the most sought-after, engaging young performers in New York, including pianist Jason Lindner, bassist Omer Avital, and drummer
Daniel Freedman, with accompaniment from guitarist Gilad Hekselman on three tracks. 'Notes From The Village' features original compositions written by Cohen as well as her interpretations of songs by Fats Waller, John Coltrane, Sam Cook and Ernesto Lecuona.
On June 25, the Anat Cohen Quartet will perform with special guests, Anat's brothers Avishai and Yuval Cohen, on a double bill with bassist Esperanza Spalding, at this year's JVC Jazz Festival. Previewing the concert, Jazz Times noted that Cohen and Spalding "have emerged as two of the most captivating young improvisers in New York."
2007 was a banner year for Anat Cohen. In June, She was voted Clarinetist of the Year and Up and Coming Musician of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association, marking the first time a female artist has won in the latter category. In July, she was voted Rising Star - Clarinet in Downbeat magazine's annual critic's poll. Also in July, Cohen became the first female horn player and the first Israeli to headline NYC's legendary Village Vanguard. Other notable 2007 performances included a sold-out headlining concert at Kennedy Center's Women in Jazz Festival, and a debut at the Newport Jazz Festival.
