MEXICO CITY, Mexico (Thalia Fans Website) - Kidnappers want $1 million for the safe release of Laura Zapata and Ernestina Sodi, sisters of Mexican actress and Latin Grammy performer Thalia, one victim's friend said Thursday.

Thalia is married to Sony Music Chairman Tommy Mottola.

Police are investigating the case in which both women disappeared Sunday after leaving a Mexico City theater where Zapata was starring in a play. Their car was found abandoned on a Mexico City road.
Family members have refused to file a report with police or talk to the media about the case.

Kidnappings are common in Mexico but many go unreported, partly because family members fear police may be involved or the victim could be killed during a botched rescue attempt.

Kidnappers set a ransom of $1 million for the safe return of the sisters. Thalia and Mottola were in Mexico and did not want police to intervene.
Police have said they will respect the family's request and will not try to rescue the women. But they have said they will continue investigating the disappearances.

Mexico City Attorney General Bernardo Batiz said officials found partial fingerprints on the abandoned car that could help in the investigation.
