Downtown Signs Publishing Agreement With Estate Of Songwriter Hall Of Fame Member Anthony Newley
New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Downtown Music Publishing announced today that the company has entered into an exclusive worldwide administration agreement with the Estate of Anthony Newley.

The deal includes several notable works from Newley's catalog including the Academy Award nominated (1963) original score for the dramatic musical production, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, with songs that have shaped popular culture such as "Pure Imagination," "The Candy Man," "Oompa Loompa," and "(I've Got A) Golden Ticket", penned alongside songwriting partner Leslie Bricusse.

"Newley was able to write songs that perfectly married grounded human sentiment with whimsical other-worldly flourishes, and we're honored to look after his beautiful catalog of works," said Jedd Katrancha, Downtown's Executive Vice President, Creative Services. "Furthermore, in his family we have found engaged and creative partners and together we look forward to sharing these songs that have meant so much to so many people."

"The entire family and I are very excited to partner with a forward-thinking publisher like Downtown," said Newley's daughter Tara Newley Arkle on the announcement. "From our initial meeting with Downtown, we felt confident that we had found a caring and creative home for our father's songs."

"I am greatly impressed by the respect Anthony Newley's family has for their father's musical legacy, and thrilled they have found a home at Downtown Music," said Lisa Alter of Alter, Kendrick & Baron, LLP, who represented the Newley Estate on the signing.

Anthony Newley has etched his name in history as successful songwriter, singer, director, and actor -- with a career spanning over 50 years. As a songwriter, Newley's "What Kind of Fool Am I?" won the 1963 Grammy Award for Song of the Year, and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1989. His works have been performed by the likes of Sammy Davis, Jr., Muse, Michael Bublé, and Nina Simone, among many others. As a recording artist, he enjoyed a dozen Top 40 entries on the UK Singles Chart between 1959 and 1962, including two number one hits. He is also well known for "Gonna Build a Mountain," "Once in a Lifetime," "On a Wonderful Day Like Today," "The Joker" and comic novelty songs such as "That Noise," and his versions of "Strawberry Fair" and "Pop Goes the Weasel".
