WASHINGTON, DC (Top40 Charts/ RIAA) - [The U.S. Department of Justice today announced the formation of a Task Force on Intellectual Property (http://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/2010/February/10-ag-137.html).
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) applauded the department's new initiative and said that the Administration determined efforts were essential to protecting the works of music labels, artists, songwriters, and countless others in the music community. A comment by the RIAA's Michele Ballantyne, Senior Vice President, Federal Government Relations, RIAA follows.]

"This is welcome news. Efforts to strengthen the coordination and deployment of the extensive resources of the federal government to better protect the jobs and creativity of the entertainment community is a very useful step. We're grateful for the ongoing efforts of the Administration."

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is the trade organization that supports and promotes the creative and financial vitality of the major music companies. Its members are the music labels that comprise the most vibrant record industry in the world. RIAA members create, manufacture and/or distribute approximately 85% of all legitimate recorded music produced and sold in the United States.

In support of this mission, the RIAA works to protect the intellectual property and First Amendment rights of artists and music labels; conduct consumer, industry and technical research; and monitor and review state and federal laws, regulations and policies. The RIAA also certifies Gold, Platinum, Multi-Platinum and Diamond sales awards as well as Los Premios De Oro y Platino, an award celebrating Latin music sales.
