NEW YORK (AP) - Aretha Franklin
has launched a $50 million lawsuit against a newspaper who claimed she was "drinking herself into the grave".
Franklin filed the federal lawsuit in the US against the Star newspaper, following the publication of the newspaper article in December 2000. The piece claimed that the soul legend had been forced to cancel live performances throughout her career because of her addiction to alcohol.
Franklin's lawyers claim the story, which was titled 'Aretha Franklin drinking herself into grave', "raised questions in the minds of many venues as to whether she was reliable or not," reports Reuters.
American Media Inc, who publish National Enquirer, reportedly published a retraction after the publication, but "it just exacerbated the original article", the lawsuit claims.
