In late 1959, he recorded a song that became synonymous with the name of , the Erroll Garner composition, "Misty".

Mathis is one of the few recording artists to have Top 40 hits spanning each of his first four decades as a recording artist. Mathis has received five Grammy nominations during his career, and has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame three times for "Chances Are", "Misty", and "It's Not For Me To Say".
