New York, NY. (Top40 Charts/ Appleseed Records) - Renowned a cappella sextet Sweet
Honey In The Rock performs in the Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall on Thursday, November 29 at 8:00 p.m. Rooted in a commitment to create music out of the textures of African American traditions, Sweet
Honey In The Rock's music captures the sounds of blues, spirituals, traditional gospel hymns, rap, reggae, African chants, hip hop, ancient lullabies, and jazz improvisation.
Now in its 34th season, Sweet Honey In The Rock released its latest CD, Experience...101, on the Appleseed Recordings label in September 2007. The album's 18 tracks are responses to questions posed by children ages nine through twelve about the adult world, with topics including the importance of education, the importance of global awareness, and of listening to the wisdom of elders.
Founded in 1973 by Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon, Louise Robinson, Carol Maillard, and Mie Fredericks at the D.C. Black Repertory Theater Company, Sweet Honey In The Rock has become a significant presence in the music culture of Washington, D.C., folk/gospel music, and political activism around the world. The group has toured much of the globe, performed at major political rallies and events, and been featured on Grammy Award-winning recordings as well as in documentaries and books.
More than 20 members have passed through Sweet Honey's ranks over the past 34 years; the current line-up features vocalists/hand percussionists Aisha Kahlil, Carol Maillard, Louise Robinson, Ysaye Maria Barnwell, Nitanju Bolade Casel, and sign-language interpreter Shirley Childress Saxton. Dr. Reagon retired from the ensemble in 2004.
