About New Theatre
MISSION STATEMENT
New Theatre's mission is to stimulate, provoke, challenge and entertain a diverse audience with a repertory of new works and the classics.

Ricky J. Martinez, Artistic Director
Eileen Suarez, Managing Director
Since its inception in 1986, New Theatre has been an invigorating part of South Florida's artistic community blending classics and new works with a clear commitment to stimulate, provoke, challenge and entertain its audiences, continuously reinforcing works and artists that reflect the astounding diversity of our multicultural region.

In its 29th Season, New Theatre is proud of its success as an incubator nurturing undiscovered and known playwrights in launching new plays that have successfully gone on to national and international success and acclaim. New Theatre, a member of the South Florida Theatre League and the National New Play Network (the country's alliance of nonprofit theaters that champions the development, production and continued life of new plays) produces plays that strive to stimulate, provoke, challenge and entertain a diverse audience with a repertory of new works and the classics. Most significantly, New Theatre develops new plays by early and mid-career playwrights, staging many in their world premieres. New Theatre has commissioned and/or produced World Premieres of such notable works as Nilo Cruz's 2003 Pulitzer Prize and Steinberg Award-winning play Anna in the Tropics; Tony Award-winning playwright Shirley Lauro's Clarence Darrow's Last Trial; Elaine Romero's Barrio Hollywood; Steinberg and Osborn Award nominated Just A Kiss by Catherine Bush; Quiara Alegria Hudes' 26 Miles; and National New Play Network Rolling World Premieres of both A. Rey Pamatmat's 2012 Steinberg Finalist and Citation-awarded Edith Can Shoot Things...and Hit Them; and this past season's Eugene O'Neill and Woodward/Newman Finalist, Happy by Robert Caisley. New Theatre has also provided a home for World Premieres of local professional playwrights Michael McKeever, Mario Diament, Dr. Richard Janaro, Alfred Allan Lewis, and David Caudle which later exhibit nationally and internationally. Over fifty world premieres of award-winning and successful plays have been commissioned and/or produced at New Theatre as part of its unflagging commitment to "New Voices-New Work."

New Theatre and its artists have received many honors and awards, including the Key to the City of Coral Gables, as well as several Carbonell awards from the South Florida Theater Critics Association, along with multiple nominations by Miami New Times in its Best of Miami issues. The Miami Herald and The Sun Sentinel have singled out New Theatre productions in their Best of the Year listings again and again. The company has been the recipient of funding from Theatre Communications Group, the City of Coral Gables, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Division of Cultural Affairs of the State of Florida, the National Endowment for the Arts, and is a 2013 Knight Arts Challenge Winner.

New Theatre was founded in May 1986, in a 30-seat Coral Gables store-front space by husband and wife Rafael and Kimberly de Acha. After 20 years, Founding Artistic Director Rafael de Acha retired and Associate Artistic Director Ricky J. Martinez became the Artistic Director. Ricky J. along with long-time Managing Director Eileen Suarez continue to honor the commitment to the South Florida community and its artists.
