You know - when an artist you love needs to explore new things to satisfy their creative juices they usually end up with 1 or 2 albums (or more) that you just don't like (insert Garth Brooks/Chris Gaines or Bon Jovi's country album Lost Highway). Too far of a departure from the sound we fell in love with. Some might say Eric Church's last album was in that category. I'm not one of those people. I liked the rocking in-your-face tracks. It was a welcome departure for my taste but a departure none-the-less.
This album has done something that I'm not sure any artist has ever done. After 3 great albums of Eric Church's defining sound, he made one that was totally different and now goes back to his signature sound to bring the music full circle back to why we started loving his music. It's REAL. It's written by EC. It's full of gripping stories/songs with meaning that anyone in any walk of life and any stage of life can relate to on some level.
It took me several trips thru this album to fully understand what was going on. I kept listening, waiting for (expecting) the kick-ass rock and roll side to start. Disappointed that I wasn't hearing it (it is indeed a softer sounding album than his last 2), yet totally stoked by what I was hearing - thinking to myself, this sounds familiar. Like old warm blanket familiar. Cozy.....familiar.....Ahhhh-Then it hit me. Eric Church took a step back in time and gave us some new, yet vintage music that reminds the real EC fans of why we loved his music to begin with. No trendy stuff on this record. No no! Don't get me wrong, these aren't B tracks that didn't make the cut on prior records (like that crap album that Kenny Chesney put out a few years back), but you can hear the softer style of songs from the past albums. Many of them start out acoustic with just a guitar or piano and EC. Some of them do have a rock edge too - that satisfies the harder side as well.
I love the fact that he lets us hear many of his musical influences in the songs. Steve Earle, Garth Brooks (We Shall Be Free), Don McLean (American Pie), Van Morrison (Brown Eyed Girl), Santana, Pink Floyd and Bruce Springsteen. Also a couple songs on this album could be "part 2" of some previous hits like Creepin and Give Me Back My Hometown. Some soft sounds....some rock....some Gospel....even a beachy vibe on one track.
In all - another A+++++ from Eric Church. You will like it regardless of whether you've liked him since Sinners Like Me or the Outsiders. There is something for everyone here. Don't waste another second and buy this album NOW!
Every song on "Mr. Misunderstood" is really good. Strung together with diverse, meaningful lyrics like "Mistress Named Music," "Mixed Drinks About Feelings," and "Holdin' My Own," Church's craft is at its best. Church doesn't miss the mark with a single song. In my opinion, Church raises the bar with this latest release. "Knives of New Orleans" and "Three Year Old" have such depth that only Eric Church can deliver. Church is a wonderful talent and this album is proof in itself.

With as great as this album is, I have only two complaints. First, the album does not include the song list in an obvious, chronological format (If you pay close enough attention, the song titles are scribbled across the front of the CD package; but they are still not totally visible and not in their proper order). My final complaint is, along with the songs not being listed, we are, therefore, deprived of not only the lyrics to view as we listen to the music, but as a result, the songwriters are not credited as well. (It's my personal preference to see who wrote the lyrics to my favorite tracks. Church usually does at least co-write the majority of his music, but it's still nice to see it in writing, giving credit to those who also deserve it.) The music, though, is nothing to be disappointed with. Also, with "Mr. Misunderstood," Eric Church proves that you don't need to fill your lyrics with cursing and trash to have a great album.

Einfach toll !!
If you are expecting another 'Chief' or 'The outsiders' you will be disappointed, this is Eric in a more subdued, reflective mood, similar to his earlier albums, but without the love songs he hates so much now. But he obviously hasn't turned his back on that side of his creativity. What we get with 'Mr Misunderstood' could be another classic. The awards could come flying again or country music will just ignore him again. He really should have won Entertainer of the year or Male vocalist this year in 2015. 'Chief' was a brilliant album, infact a classic, but in producing an album so different he has made a very smart move. It's late night listening with the lights turned off. The lyrics sound very personal, almost Dylan.
I really can't see how country radio is going to play most of these songs, they don't suit radio, so don't expect many singles from this set. The title track is climbing up the country charts in America, but that could be it. But maybe it's release is a stop-gap to another album next year. He wrote 20 songs for this 10 track release after all. Great songs, great lyrics. A brilliant album.
