Kelly Clarkson has reached the point in an illustrious career where she can package her hits into her first greatest hits compilation. This compilation arrives via  Greatest Hits-Chapter One , a seventeen track/one disc collection. Greatest Hits - Chapter One gets the whole 'compilation' thing right, nitpicking about what to include from each of Ms. Clarkson's five solo discs, as well as hit duet with Jason Aldean ("Don't You Wanna Stay" originally from  My Kinda Party ) and some new songs ("Catch My Breath," "People Like Us," and "Don't Rush" featuring Vince Gill. And no compilation would be complete without the holiday cut tacked on somewhere right? Clarkson's "I'll Be Home For Christmas" closes. Since many have heard these selections, this review won't analyze production, songwriting etc., but will evaluate as a compilation.

Clarkson's first album Thankful (2003) is represented by no. 9 Grammy-nominated hit "Miss Independent" (Track 3) and no. 1 American Idol winning single "A Moment Like This" (Track 16). These are the two most representative cuts of Clarkson's debut, so kudos to the choices made. The Deluxe version tacks on "Beautiful Disaster" near the end, but ultimately disregards the excellent "Trouble With Love Is" and minor hit "Low." Even so, "Miss Independent" and "A Moment Like This" are more definitive.

Second album 2004's sextuple-platinum, 2x Grammy winning juggernaut
Breakaway  is the best represented effort, sporting no. 2 hit "Since U Been Gone" (track 1), no. 6 hit "Behind These Hazel Eyes" (track 5), no. 7 ballad "Because Of You" (track 6), no. 6 Avril Lavigne co-write "Breakaway" (track 10) and no. 12 "Walk Away" (track 12). All five songs were huge hits at the time and represent the pop chanteuse at her very best. No quibbles here.

Third album 2007's My December was Clarkson's miss. There was controversy all along the way between Clarkson and Clive Davis in regards to the tone and material featured on the album. While Clarkson failed to back down, sales weren't favorable and the sole hit was the dark no. 8 cut "Never Again." The cut does make an appearance here (track 7), following "Because of You" and serving as a darker contrast to the somber ballad.

Fourth album, 2009's 'comeback'
All I Ever Wanted  is represented by bubblegum sensible no. 1 "My Life Would Suck Without You" (track 2) and popular no. 13 hit "Already Gone" (track 8). "I Do Not Hook Up" only graces the deluxe edition. While it's absence could scrutinized since it was a top 20 hit, it's absence is also justifiable.

2011's
Stronger (Deluxe Version)  yields representation via no. 10 hit "Mr. Know It All" (no. 9) and no. 1 hit "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" (track 4). These are the two most notable cuts from Stronger, though "Dark Side" wouldn't have been questioned had it appeared.

As for the rest, "Don't You Wanna Stay" is a sound choice (track 11) considering it was part of Jason Aldean's breakthrough and did hit the top 40. "Catch My Breath" (track 13) is a solid promo single, even if it isn't as strong as the juggernauts showcased on this compilation (produced by Sound Kollectiv) . "People Like Us" (track 14) finds Clarkson in solid voice against a driving pop production (produced by Greg Kurstin). "Don't Rush" (track 15) is certainly pleasant, with Vince Gill adding nice vocal harmonies to Clarkson's lead (produced by Dann Huff). Closing cut "I'll Be Home For Christmas" (track 17) is described as the iTunes Session Version, produced by Thuy-An Julien. Maybe its inclusion is odd, but Clarkson performs it extremely well if nothing else.

All-in-all, there are no missteps on this compilation. The standard version accomplishes the task of showcasing Clarkson's biggest hits while the Deluxe adds a few more notable pieces of her discography. The new cuts don't propel Clarkson's star any loftier, but do find her in superb voice. Highly recommended for both the die-hard and casual Kelly Clarkson fan. 4 stars.

I did not watch American Idol till season 2 so didn't see the initial introduction of Kelly Clarkson. And then I honestly never gave her a chance. I don't listen to the radio much and she went under my radar. Till the song STRONGER came along. OMG, that song blew me away in her vocal performance and I related to it in so many ways. I purchased this Greatest Hits cd and fell in love. Song after song I fell in love with the versatility, range and vocal prowess of Kelly Clarkson. I like all types of music but what matters to me most is emotion and meaning coming from a song and how it is performed. To me Kelly is in a class of her own. She imparts such emotion in each note and line of a song and her range goes from quiet and still in a ballad to belting with such power that tingles to up and down my spine. I then purchased every cd she has done and love them all while being impressed with the true versatility when looking at them all. My favorite ones are ALL I EVER WANTED, MY DECEMBER and STRONGER.

This Greatest Hits cd is a great representation of her work from the beginning till now and there is even the gift of new tracks. There are no tracks that don't work for me but my faves are SINCE U BEEN GONE, MY LIFE WOULD SUCK WITHOUT YOU, BECAUSE OF YOU, NEVER AGAIN, PEOPLE LIKE US and of course STRONGER. So due to one song STRONGER, I was introduced to a truly gifted artist who is now my favorite performer. When an artist has what she has - strong vocal and emotive ability, song writing skill and the ability to put their soul in a song - there is only greatness for her as she moves forward. Highly recommend this cd and all the other Kelly Clarkson cds. An amazing talent I am so glad to have discovered.

Wow, having all her hits on one CD is fantastic! I have all of her studio albums, but having all of her biggest hits and three new songs on this CD is great! Kelly really has had this many hits, and there is absolutely no filler on here... just that powerful voice singing some of our favorite songs of the last ten years. It is a real credit to her radio-friendly music and her amazing voice that so many of these songs are still playing on the radio today even though a few of these songs date back 6-10 years.

The three new songs on here are some of her strongest tracks to date, and they are all very different from each other too. "Catch My Breath" and "People Like Us" are aimed at the top-40/pop audience, while "Don't Rush" is a lush country duet with Vince Gil that is reminiscent of country radio in the 80's. I love all three of them, and it is very likely that "People Like Us" will be a radio-smash on level with "Stronger."

If you are at all a fan of Kelly Clarkson, this is your chance to get not only her greatest hits of past eras, but also a glimpse into her future with the three new recordings. This CD is a MUST BUY!

First, I am partial to this as Kelly is my favorite artist and I think her voice can do no wrong, so keep that in mind.

The deluxe edition is a must have for any true Kelly Clarkson fan. Not only because there are more songs (it has new songs that aren't included on the regular edition) but a DVD with ALL her music videos...except Catching My Breath, or any videos released after that. The DVD is simple, with a basic menu. You can play all her videos, or pick one.

The main thing to remember, is a greatest hits CD is not going to be all that interesting. You have heard most of these songs hundreds of times and probably can sing along with all of them for the most part. The new songs are a nice touch, so you get a little more for your money.

I love having this CD because it is a nice compilation of her work throughout the years. I love her new songs too. It is a great CD for the avid fan or as a gift for someone that doesn't have any of her CDs.

Hope this review helps. God Bless!

The pop with trademark of Kelly Clarkson has been with us ever since her victory in maiden edition of American Idol. This is a well-known fact. A less known one is that Kelly had been going to auditions many times before the Idol started and as such she was already a full-fledged singer.
With the kick-off for the public spotlight, she was fortunate to have received many hit songs by the trendy songwriters in the first decade of 2000s, including Ryan Tedder, Greg Kurstin, Ben Moody, and, of course, Max Martin. She had a knack for finding songs with great, singable hooks - My Life Would Suck Without You, Already Gone, Catch My Breath are among the very best. But Kelly is equally good in ballads, just witness Because of You or A Moment Like This. This generous compilation brims with good songs to the full, reaching even into regular country territory in duets with Jason Aldean and Vince Gill. Certainly, this is one of the strongest set of tunes anyone in the pop world could release in the decade post 2002.
