Editorial Reviews

Grammy-nominated rockers Skillet will release Unleashed (August 5th), their new studio album and follow up to their 2013 release Rise, which bowed at #4 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart. The 12-track album, a year in the making, is currently available for pre-order via all digital retailers. Pre-orders will include an instant download of the debut single "Feel Invincible," and a lyric video.
UNLEASHED-from the bombastic opening riff of "Feel Invincible" to the memorable closing of the album finale "The Resistance," it is clear the band has created an album that lets their music speak loudest, while still delivering some of their most personal and heartfelt collections of songs to date. Songs like "Back From The Dead," "Stars" and "Out Of Hell" showcase the musicianship and songwriting that has garnered the band a rabid worldwide fan base, a platinum selling album and multiple Grammy nominations. Skillet has cemented its place as one of the 21st century's most successful rock bands.

FANtastic!!
5 Stars
FANtastic!!
I am a longtime Skillet fan and this is one FANtastic album!! Was excited the entire day at work, waiting to get off so I could download it at midnight, Michigan time! Love all the songs, especially, "Back From The Dead", "Stars", "I Want To Live", "Watching For Comets", and "Out Of Hell". But all of them are good. Picking a favourite is like choosing your favourite flavor of ice cream. All are tasty! All of the songs rock hard! Love the metal in the songs, brings me back to my teen days!! Excellent work, Skillet. Hope to see you in Detroit in October! God bless and keep you!Included are some photos from a Winter Jam concert in Lansing, Michigan in 2008!
Thank you for your feedback

When I first picked up the new Skillet album I wasn't sure what to expect. Would it follow the dynamics of Rise? Would it be heavy like Comatose and Awake? I would almost say none of the above. The album has a totally different feel which as a music fan is great because you want bands to try new things and go in new directions but still have that lyrical and underlying musical appeal that they bring to the table. I would say this album is no different in that if you want to see Skillet keep trying new things this is what is next. It is cool with a slight techno feel at times but you still get those heavy, underlying rhythm guitar parts along with the slightly understated lead guitar along with good lyrics and new beats. I can definitely see that John is trying new areas with his range. Honestly I think the only thing I'd like to see is more dramatic solos. I know Seth is a good guitarist and let him shine I say with some more soloing and don't keep it subtle.

Anyway, so the point of my review? If you want to hear what's next for Skillet give it a listen. It is good and although I wasn't as thrilled as Rise with the first listen just put it on repeat and listen to it for a few days in your car like I do. It gets better and better with each listen and I am appreciating the songs and the lyrics more each time. I would say I feel like Skillet is going back to more Christian rock lyrics on this album. What I mean by that is while Rise told a story this album is going back to the reason Skillet started writing music. See if you can pick up on that too. Enjoy.

For me this is the Christian/Positive album that I've been waiting for in 2016. I was hoping that Thousand Foot Krutch's "Exhale" was going to be what I was waiting for, but for me it just didn't do it. Generally speaking I love TFK's music and I'm not here to bash them or that album as it's a fine album, but it's just not for me. Skillet's "Unleashed" on the other hand is exactly what I've been patiently waiting for in 2016.

"Unleashed" has a continuous driving theme that continues throughout the album and it rarely lets up. It's almost like Christian/Positive music with an attitude, which is something that I can relate to and get into. It does let you breath a couple times with songs like "Stars", "Lions" & "Watching for Comets", but even those are well received ballads that prompt you to sing along with their melodies. Some of the stars of the album for me are "Feel Invincible", "Back from the Dead", "I Want to Live", "Undefeated", "Out of Hell", "Burn it Down" and pretty much the rest of the album. Admittedly the lyrics may be a little on the more generic side of things, but the music is so intense & so driving that it's something that I'll be ok with overlooking the lyrics.

Again, if you're looking for Christian/Positive music to work out to, then this album is for you. I know everyone's opinions of music are different, but for me "Unleashed" is Skillet's best album to date. It's a no-brainer 5 Star album.

When I heard Skillet was returning to the producer of Comatose, I was excited and hopeful for a return to that sound. The release of 'Feel Invincible' greatly tempered those expectations. While I enjoyed the track, it was just not the sound that made me fall in love with Skillet.

This album has nowhere near the musical depth that Comatose had. Strings are almost non-existent, as are chilling riffs, such as in 'Whispers in the Dark.' That being said, I found myself enjoying nearly every track on this new album. Musically, this album is well executed anthem rock. This album is very energetic and easy to get down with. Vocally, John Cooper is pushing his voice to highs I didn't know he could reach. I'm honestly surprised his voice is still holding up so well. You can also hear the continued development of Jen's voice, particularly on 'I Want To Live.' Lyrically, this album is an interesting combination of desperation to God's grace and a supreme confidence in His strength working through us.

'Unleashed' is a solid addition to the Skillet anthology. It is missing some musical depth and complexity, but that lack works okay for the direction the band took with this release.

This is my 3rd Skillet CD, I own Awake, Rise, and now Unleashed. I enjoyed every single song on all 3 CD's and truly enjoy the way the mix great rock songs with a few religious lyrics songs mixed into the batch. To give you a few examples I want to Live, Lions when it says "We walk by Faith not by sight", Saviors of the World, and The Resistance. Then you have songs like Stars and Watching for Comets that make me think of my future wife and the lyrics are so touching and shows great emotions. Then you have the hard rock songs like Feel Invincible, Back From The Dead, Undefeated, Famous, Out of Hell, and Burn it Down. So in closing Skillet gives there fans another amazing music CD with a true mixture of songs for every fan of there's between religious songs that make you want to sing along to or even the hard rock songs bang head to, or even the strong relationship lyrics that make you think of your love ones.

I'm a long time Panhead and am NOT disappointed by this album. Yes, they have shifted their style some, however that should be expected by now as their sound has changed greatly since their self-titled debut in 1996. Personally, I have yet to pick a favorite song as they are all good. Two great songs that bring them back to their Christian roots are Stars which is a pure worship song and Lions which is somewhere between a worship song and soft rock anthem. However, they still have some hard hitting songs with Back From the Dead and Out of hell. Overall, a great album and I can't wait to see them again in Orlando next month. EDIT: After a couple more listens on different systems, make sure to turn the bass up. The album does lose some of it's power if the bass is to low. Also to the people complaining about the sound, then listen to their entire catalog. The sounds of this album reflect much of their previous albums.
