New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Shortly before the release of their debut album, Bleach, Kurt Cobain & Co. were fond of covering a song by a little known band from Finland. The song was "Run Rabbit Run" and the band was Smack, a high energy glam punk outfit whose influence spread not only to Nirvana but also to the other giant of '90s American hard rock, Guns N' Roses! Now, this unsung and little heard quintet will see a vintage concert performance of theirs released on CD for the first time ever. Helsinki 1986 catches the band at the peak of its powers, performing all the songs that endeared them to fans all over the world. The CD booklet contains rare photos as well as liner notes from fellow Finn Jyrki 69 of the goth rock band The 69 Eyes. Helsinki 1986 will be available on August 7 from Cleopatra Records.
Formed in the summer of 1982 when two young punk rock guitarists named Kartsa and Manchuria met up with 16-year old vocalist Claude and bassist Cheri, Smack quickly developed a sound and performance energy that followed in the footsteps of their American heroes, Iggy & The Stooges, New York Dolls, and The MC5. They soon found themselves signing to a label and opening for Hanoi Rocks. Their debut album, Smack On You, was released in 1984 and became an instant classic. Kartsa departed just prior to the release of 1985's Rattlesnake Bite, with Rane stepping in to fill his shoes, while Jimi Zero replaced Cheri in 1986. Which brings us to the line-up featured on this extraordinary concert album, a stunning glimpse into one of the youngest, hungriest bands playing their hearts out for an adoring hometown audience.
