James Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing his next project, Remember This House. The book was to be a revolutionary, personal account of the lives and successive assassinations of three of his close friends—Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and
Martin Luther King, Jr.
At the time of Baldwin's death in 1987, he left behind only thirty completed pages of his manuscript.
Now, in his incendiary new documentary, master filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book
James Baldwin never finished. The result is a radical, up-to-the-minute examination of race in America, using Baldwin's original words and flood of rich archival material. I Am Not Your Negro is a journey into black history that connects the past of the Civil Rights movement to the present of #BlackLivesMatter. It is a film that questions black representation in Hollywood and beyond. And, ultimately, by confronting the deeper connections between the lives and assassination of these three leaders, Baldwin and Peck have produced a work that challenges the very definition of what
America stands for.
ABOUT ALEXEI AIGUI
Born in Moscow in 1971. Since 2000s, Aigui is based both in Russia and France, and is the frequent collaborator of French directors like Raoul Peck, Pascal Bonitzer,
Marina de Van. Most recently, he composed the score for two Raoul Peck's films: the acclaimed, Oscar-nominated documentary 'I Am Not Your Negro' and 'The Young Karl Marx', set to premiere in 67th Berlinale Special Gala. His score for 'I Am Not Your Negro' was also nominated for 2017 Cinema Eye Honors Awards.
Aigui is one of the most popular composers in Russia, with all national film awards and over 50 credits to his name.
He launched the first 'Silent cinema - Live Music' project in Russia back in 1990s, composing new scores for iconic films, such as: 'Metropolis' by Fritz Lang (1927), Ernst Lubitch's 'The Doll' (1919), 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari' (1920), as well as a few legendary Soviet silent masterpieces.
In his music, Aigui unites the elements of contemporary classical and electronic music, jazz, pop and rock. Composer and violinist in his own Ensemble 4'33'', named after the iconic piece by John Cage, he is also known for collaborations with prominent musicians and composers from all over the world: German pianist and composer Dietmar Bonnen, French multi-instrumentalist
Pierre Bastien, legendary Japanese band Hikashu, as well as violinist Keisuke Ohta.
