Milan Records Presents "I, Tonya" Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Milan Records has released the I, Tonya - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally and it will be available on CD on December 15th. The album features the movie's original score by Peter Nashel (New York, I Love You, Carriers, The Deep End). I, Tonya released in select theaters on December 8th.

"This score is different for me in that it lives in a much more traditional orchestral world than some of my other projects like Marco Polo, Rubicon or Incorporated.
Many of my previous scores were hybrid in nature and explored using analog and digital synths, and drones and pulses combined with acoustic elements.
In the past, I've also always enjoyed using my studio as a major instrument in the music-making process, but for this film, I didn't do that. That was certainly new to me.

Musically, this score was a departure for me in that I tried to build thematic material without relying on melody as much as one would traditionally.
While spotting the film, any time that we listened to a cue that was melodic in nature, it immediately felt too "present"— as if it were trying too hard.
So the puzzle that had to be solved was how do inject the drama and gravitas into what's happening--which often played to great comedic effect—without being melodic in nature.
I ended up using minimalist techniques which became a primary part of my writing process and a very prominent feature in how I eventually built up the final themes." says Nashel of the score.

About I, Tonya:

Based on the unbelievable, but true events, I, Tonya is a darkly comedic tale of American figure skater, Tonya Harding, and one of the most sensational scandals in sports history. Though Harding was the first American woman to complete a triple axel in competition, her legacy was forever defined by her association with an infamous, ill-conceived, and even more poorly executed attack on fellow Olympic competitor Nancy Kerrigan. Featuring an iconic turn by Margot Robbie as the fiery Harding, a mustachioed Sebastian Stan as her impetuous ex-husband Jeff Gillooly, a tour-de-force performance from Allison Janney as her acid-tongued mother, LaVona Golden, and an original screenplay by Steven Rogers, Craig Gillespie's I, Tonya is an absurd, irreverent, and piercing portrayal of Harding's life and career in all of its unchecked--and checkered--glory.

About Peter Nashel:

Peter Nashel is a New York based composer for television and film. He began his classical musical education on the piano at age six, but it was his interest in jazz as a teen that led him to start composing his own music.

Early on, Peter studied at the Tanglewood Institute, as well as the Eastman School of Music with Jeff Beal. He went on to attend Wesleyan University, where he studied under jazz legend Bill Barron and electronic music pioneer Alvin Lucier. This experience led to his deep interest in boundary defying music and music that freely blends acoustic and electronic elements—a hallmark of his sound.

After graduating school, Peter moved to New York. He started off as a freelance musician but took a creative detour when he had the opportunity to write music for advertising, which proved to be an invaluable training ground for television and film composition. Around this time, Peter developed a keen interest in album production, eventually working with indie darlings Ivy and Duncan Sheik.

In 2000, Peter got his first opportunity to score a feature film. A Sundance favorite, The Deep End starring Tilda Swinton was named the best film of 2001 by The New Yorker's David Debney. He followed that with another dramatic thriller, The Night Listener starring Robin Williams and Toni Collette. Since then Peter has gone on to collaborate with many top filmmakers including Tom McCarthy (Win Win), Alex Gibney (Client 9) and most recently, Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya). 

Among Peter's many television credits are Rubicon (AMC), Dirty Sexy Money (ABC) and Marco Polo (Netflix). He has had the privilege of working with some of television's finest producers and writers including Stephen Gaghan, Greg Berlanti, Shawn Ryan, Scott Rosenberg, and Daniel Minihan among many others.
Peter's music has been featured by David Garland on WNYC's Movies On the Radio as well as by Nic Harcourt on KCRW's Morning Becomes Electric.
