Sony Music Releases Animated Bamboo Flute Orchestra Video Featuring Artwork By Rina Matsudaira
New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Sony Music Labels today released a music video in support of "Shakuhachi Classic," the second album by all-female traditional instrumental ensemble Bamboo Flute Orchestra. The video is a collaboration with celebrated up-and-coming visual artist Rina Matsudaira, and features the animated likenesses of the five Bamboo Flute Orchestra members performing the middle section of Gustav Holst's Jupiter, known to some contemporary listeners as "World in Union." Watch the video here.

Bamboo Flute Orchestra, which performs contemporary favorites on the traditional Japanese bamboo flute shakuhachi, debuted in 2016 as the solo project of Yoshimi Tsujimoto, who first earned global attention through a series of video interpretations of pop hits performed with traditional Japanese instrumentation. For second album, "Shakuhachi Classic"—which features arrangements of popular orchestral works, along with theme songs from various hit Japanese TV dramas—the project has expanded its lineup to five members, all young shakuhachi virtuosos.

The visuals in the new video for "Jupiter" were created by young contemporary artist Rina Matsudaira, whose work in the Nihonga style offers a distinctive modern take on a traditional Japanese aesthetic. Recipient of the Kyoto City Prize for New Artists in 2017, her efforts to expand her activities have included album cover designs for Japan-based French singer-songwriter Clémentine, and Japanese singer Kousuke Atari.

"It was inspiring to have ourselves depicted in this wonderful artwork," the group members of Bamboo Flute Orchestra said. "We think the combination with the tone of the shakuhachi really reaffirms the strengths of Japanese culture and the beauty of the four seasons. We hope many people around the world will get the chance to see it." Matsudaira added, "I worked hard to capture each member's personality, and I'll be thrilled if people enjoy the way it complements their shakuhachi music."
