New York, NY (Top40 Charts) This morning, Green Man festival goers awoke to bright blue skies and sunshine after yet another phenomenal day and night at the sold out festival. Scottish rock titans
Mogwai put on a blistering set, headlining the Mountain Stage in spectacular fashion as the vista of the
Black Mountains loomed large behind them, adding another layer of gravitas to their visceral sound. The band performed a selection of new tracks from their UK Official Album Chart #1 record As The Love Continues, which were greeted with the same rapturous reception as classics from their treasure trove of a back catalogue including the closing song, the commanding live favourite "Mogwai Fear Satan".
Last night at the Far Out stage
Black Midi ripped through their set playing tracks from their 2021 record Cavalcade. It was a seismic set, one that was brimming with madcap energy. Halfway through the set frontman Georgdie Greep, already wearing a dressing gown, changed into slippers, literally making himself at home on stage. The set then took another left-turn with the band breaking into a cover of
Kate Nash classic "
Foundations", sung by bassist Cameron Picton. The set closed with the band whipping the audience into a frenzy with "Ducter", the final track from their first album Schlagenheim.
There was a surprise in store for Green Man goers walking past the Green Man Records tent during the afternoon where Brit award winning, and Grammy and Mercury Prize nominated
Laura Marling performed a surprise intimate set including "Rambling Man" and "Held Down".
It was a strong day for jazz at Green Man, with Yazmin Lacey putting on a glorious performance, whilst over on the Far Out stage the crowds were entranced by the sounds of Emma-Jean Thackray. KOKOROKO later charmed a late afternoon main stage crowd, their elastic grooves rippling across the field.
It was an incredible day for local Welsh talent: Melin Melyn became the talk of the festival after their set on the Rising stage, local hero Gruff Rhys owned the main stage and Welsh harpist Catrin Finch, performing with Seckou Keita, entranced the audience earlier in the day.
Getting later into the night Giant Swan brought their pulverising techno to the Far Out tent: the Bristol duo were a truly unstoppable force. Loraine James' artfully deconstructed beats were a highlight in the Walled Garden before Dutty
Disco closed stage for a night with an uplifting selection of bangers.
Throughout the day the Talking Shop stage buzzed with delightful conversations. Poet laureate
Simon Armitage read to an overflowing audience, whilst Caitlin Moran and Pete Paphides were in conversation, filling the tent with humour.
Later at the Last Laugh stage, the atmosphere was buzzing as there was another day of sidesplitting comedy courtesy of Kiri Pritchard McLean,
Hannah Platt, Sunil Patel and many other brilliant comedians.
As the festival comes to an end tonight, Fontaines D.C. are set to close out the festival with their first major festival headline slot. There's also performances from US bass maestro Thundercat, pop-legend-in-waiting Self Esteem, London jazz force Steam Down, Mercury-Prize nominated Porridge
Radio and some very special secret sets.
Following Fontaines D.C.'s headline set, the crowd will head towards the iconic Green Man effigy for the annual Sunday night burn, marking the end of the festival in spectacular style. It's a special end to the weekend and a ritual so many have missed over the past year with messages and wishes from festival-goers written into the effigy throughout the weekend, and flames reaching into the sky as the Green Man turns to ash.
