Out December 3rd, Sentimental Noise is both a 17-song album and 200-page book, each bringing Jagjaguwar face-to-face with its former self. The record uncovers new and unreleased music from some of the label's earliest friends, such as Drunk and Manishevitz, plus Jagjaguwar legends like Wilderness, Oneida and Bloomington post-rock heroes Tammar, special contributions from Jenny Hval, the mysterious noise mongers of Canada's Wold/Fauchion and Oslo's Some Nerve, and two loving tributes to the Patron Saint of Jagjaguwar, John Prine, including a cover of "Blue Umbrella" by Bevel and an original song by Charlotte, NC's Zodiac Lovers. Harkening back to Jagjaguwar's pre-label origins as a cassette compilation and accompanying zine, Sentimental Noise, Issue #001 is equal parts oral history, poetry journal and black metal zine. Its 200 pages were created in collaboration with visual artist Nina Hartmann, and the book features previously unpublished poems from the likes of
David Berman and Sharon Van Etten, tribute pieces from Dead Oceans founder Phil Waldorf and Secretly Canadian founders Ben and Chris Swanson, plus troves of images, inside jokes, heartfelt love letters and more spanning Jagjaguwar's past 25 years. The third installment, Join The Ritual, nodded to Jagjaguwar's roots in Dungeons & Dragons, while artists and alumni of the label paid homage to the music that originally captured the imaginations of
Darius Van Arman and Chris Swanson.
Angel Olsen, Bruce Hornsby, Cut Worms, Jamila Woods, Nap Eyes, Okay Kaya, Pink Mountaintops, S. Carey, Spencer Krug, The Besnard Lakes and They Hate Change each covered the songs of Smog, Dinosaur Jr., Tracy Chapman, Built to Spill, R.E.M., Low, Stereolab and more who originally inspired the label into existence, and with the album came a limited edition blend of coffee with Tinker Coffee Co.
