How Musicians Influence Video Games
New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Most creative industries are closely intertwined. There's significant overlap between fashion and film, art and music, and, yes, video games and music. Indeed, the relationship between the latter group has grown considerably in recent years. You'll find musician cameo appearances in some of the biggest video games around. People that use an introductory spins deal can also find a selection of musician-based slot games, such as Guns N' Roses-based Welcome to the Jungle and Motorhead-themed Ace of Spades. And with video game music playing an increasingly prominent role in titles, it's little surprise that many game developers are turning to the expert ears of famous musicians to compose their scores.

Direct Inspiration for Titles

On the face of it, it would seem difficult to base a video game on a musician. But those game developers are a creative bunch, and they've not only found a way to do it — they've found a way to do it well. In the past few decades, there have been a host of video games based on artists or groups, including 50 Cent: Bulletproof, Iron Maiden: Legacy of the Beast, and Michael Jackson's Moonwalker, as well as the aforementioned slots games like Ace of Spades, based on Motorhead. These musicians, along with others, have larger-than-life personalities that lend themselves well to the fun and excitement of the video game world.  

Composing the Soundtrack 

Go back to the early days of video games, and you'll hear a 'soundtrack,' if you can really call it that, which was little more than beeps and basic melodies. But all that has changed now. Video games typically feature sweeping scores, many of which have been put together by some of the world's most prominent musicians. Artists as diverse as Paul McCartney, Trent Reznor, Skrillex, Dr Dre, Sigur Ros, and Ariana Grande have all scored video games. Video game developers may have always wanted famous faces to score their music, but it's only now that they really have the budget to do so. 

Musician Cameos in Video Games

Game developers have also looked to include musicians in their games via brief — or sometimes slightly more prominent — cameos. You'll find James Hetfield in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD, while Travis Scott appears in Fortnite. Phil Collins even makes an appearance in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories in one of the more iconic musician cameos; if you manage to successfully protect Phil, you can return to the arena later on and enjoy his concert in full. Now that's a cameo!
