Boston, MA (CLEAR NOTE PUBLICATIONS) - A new CD recording by Berklee College of Music composition faculty member and guitarist Apostolos Paraskevas explores contemporary expressions of lamentation with the voice of classical guitar. https://www.clearnote.net/Laments_CD.html In the fall of 2003, Paraskevas commissioned laments from his fellow faculty members at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Twelve of his colleagues accepted the challenge to compose works of a melancholic nature for the collection. Surprisingly, given the conceptual parameters of the project, the pieces vary greatly in style, tonality, and in their exploitation of the guitar's expressive resources. Five of the composers whose work is represented on the CD are guitarists themselves. The other seven composers, though not guitarists, succeeded in composing works that explore many of the idiomatic elements of the guitar that have made it such a beloved instrument. As well, inspiration for the works comes from the blues, the guitar's rich Spanish heritage, 12-tone compositional technique, and from post-20th century musical approaches. The distinguished composers of the laments have received numerous awards, commissions, and performances of their music by world-renowned organizations throughout America, Europe, Greece, and beyond. Paraskevas recorded 12 of the laments for this CD in January 2006 for the newly released disc. Both the recording and the anthology of music titled13 Laments for Solo Guitar are available from Clear Note Publications and Recordings. The company offers innovative new works and ageless classics for concert guitarists in hard copy form as sheet music and CDs and as digital downloads.
