LAS VEGAS (VH1) - Cher and
Cyndi Lauper will team up for a duet of "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)" on
Thursday (May 23) when VH1 Divas Las Vegas: A Benefit Concert For The VH1 Save The
Music Foundation airs live from the MGM Grand at 9 p.m. ET.
Lauper told that she's become more comfortable over the years with her status as a famous female musician. "When it first happened in 1984 and 1985, I didn't care for it because people had preconceptions of who they thought you were, you know? You'd say hello to somebody, and they'd just look at you like, 'Hmph,' or you wouldn't say hello to somebody because maybe you didn't want to intrude on their space and they'd look at you like, 'Hmph.'"
During the Divas Las Vegas event, Celine Dion is scheduled to duet with Anastacia, while Whitney Houston will perform with Mary J. Blige. Other performers include the Dixie Chicks, Shakira, and Stevie Nicks. Ellen DeGeneres will host the show, while Las Vegas legend Wayne Newton will take on announcing duties for the special.
The Divas Las Vegas after-party is the place to be following the concert. The hit-making Southern California remix-and-production team Thunderpuss (Barry Harris and Chris Cox) will DJ the gig at the MGM Grand's Studio 54. Thunderpuss has collaborated on remixes for five of the participating divas--Cher, Dion, Blige, Shakira, and Anastasia--and the duo currently has Cher, Blige, and Shakira remixes on the Billboard Hot Dance Music chart.
VH1's Divas specials raise funds for its VH1 Save The Music Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring instrumental music programs in America's public schools, and to raising awareness of the positive impact that music participation has on students.
