NEW YORK (Nirvana Fans Website) - Courtney Love and Universal Music Group officially announced the end of their two-year legal battle, which will leave Nirvana fans quite pleased. The Nirvana box set - which was at the heart of one of Love's issues with UMG, not to mention with former Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic - now has the official green light. While Love said the box set will be out by Christmas, UMG has yet to confirm any release dates. It looks now as if the compilation album - featuring the last Nirvana recording before Kurt Cobain's death in 1994, "You Know You're Right" - will be the pre-Christmas release instead, with a box set and rarities albums to follow. The settlement also frees Love from recording for UMG, gives ownership of unreleased Hole recordings to Love, and waives the label's re-recording restriction for some previously released Hole songs. However, Love can, if she wants, release a Hole long-form video via UMG under a new agreement. She announced the demise of Hole in May. "I'm excited to be releasing music again, and rock music is starting to become very fun," says Love in a statement released Monday (Sept. 30). "I plan to continue my advocacy of artists in Sacramento and Washington, where this belongs. I look forward to joining my fellow recording artists as we look for solutions to the problems we face in the music business. We must all work together through lobbying and collective bargaining to create the opportunities that have been lacking in our careers. "This would not have been possible without the effort of my manager James Barber," she continues. "He was able to work with Universal executives to devise a settlement and to work with the other members of Nirvana to negotiate a long-term plan that will protect my family's legacy." Love, meanwhile, is in the midst of writing a new album in Los Angeles with Linda Perry and plans to finish recording in the U.K. and France. The first single is due in January on Poptones Records in the U.K. She is also readying her role as Lady Macbeth in Luc Besson and Vincent Regan's Macbeth.
