NY (E! News) - A publicist for the ailing songbird has confirmed to E! News Daily that Carey is
"under psychiatric care" in an undisclosed hospital, after she was admitted last week suffering from a case of "extreme exhaustion." The 31-year-old pop diva will still miss her previously scheduled performance Wednesday at MTV's 20th anniversary show, not to mention a string of other upcoming appearances to promote her new film and soundtrack, Glitter.
Carey's hospitalization was initially attributed to her recent breakneck schedule, which included working on two movies and her new album. But her publicist, Cindi Berger, now says Carey suffered "an emotional and physical breakdown." The rep also denied London tabloid reports that Carey attempted suicide by cutting herself.
"There was no suicide attempt," Berger tells E! News Daily. "Mariah did break some dishes and glasses last Wednesday and may have cut her foot, but she definitely did not hurt herself intentionally. The suicide reports are not true."
She also added that Carey's boyfriend of three years, singer Luis Miguel, is "very concerned about her" and the two "have not officially broken up," brushing off London tabloid reports that Carey was distraught over their breakup.
Carey's hospitalization has now left both 20th Century Fox and Virgin Records in a precarious situation--potentially promoting a new film and soundtrack without their big star. Berger said Tuesday that the press junket for Glitter, originally set for August 17, is canceled, but the film is still scheduled to hit theaters August 31.
Virgin Records, meanwhile, is standing pat with its August 21 release for the soundtrack - Carey's first release under her new megabucks deal with the label.
The buxom singer's troubles went public last week, after she posted two bizarre messages to fans on her official Website, www.MariahCarey.com.
"So basically, all I really wanna say is I don't know what's going on with life, and I hope all the fans are good, and I just want you to know that I'm trying to understand things in life right now, and so I really don't feel that I should be doing music right now," one of her messages read.
"Glitter is going to be out soon. And you're going to have that, and I'm gonna be taking some time off," she added. "What I'd like to do is take a little break, or at least get one night of sleep."
The Web posting and hospital visit also came just days after she staged a Farrah Fawcett-style appearance on MTV's Total Request Live, in which she strolled out half-naked, pushing an ice-cream cart and reading a love letter from her mom to host Carson Daly.
Carey's been under a bit of pressure lately. The songstress, who has tallied more than $140 million record sales worldwide, left Sony in April to sign a multi-album, multimillion-dollar deal with Virgin Records that's valued between $17 million and $20 million, making it one of the most lucrative in music history.
The semi-autobiographical Glitter stars Carey as an aspiring singer who gets her big break in the music biz with the help of a DJ whom she later falls in love with. In addition to starring in the film and producing and recording the soundtrack, Carey also recently had been filming another movie, Lions Gate's WiseGirls, costarring Mira Sorvino, due out sometime next year.
