Los Angeles, CA. (Top40 Charts/ Mighty Like a Rosebud Records) - Singer-songwriter Heather Waters lifts off with a batch of fresh new tunes on her forthcoming CD, "propeller", scheduled for release on April 24, 2008 on the independent Mighty Like a Rosebud Records.
Waters, who earned reams of critical praise on her last release, shadow of you, glows on 'propeller' with a collection of songs that signals she's not only comfortable stepping out of her Americana sweetheart shoes, she excels at it. Recorded in Los Angeles with Waters producing, the CD is a vibrant musical and lyrical landscape, drawing from an array of genres to craft a sound as rich as it is rocking, as torchy as it is rootsy.
"propeller" opens with "Diane", a Delphic murder ballad swathed in eerie New England imagery and haunting Hammond B3 swells. On the first single, "Wait for Me", which will go to AAA radio in May, Michael Chaves' edgy guitar and the driving bass and drum groove of rhythm section powerhouses Sean Hurley and Craig Macintyre announce an energizing new direction. The result is crisp, satisfying and hip like the lovechild of Rilo Kiley and Emmylou Harris. Co-written with Rich McCulley for Waters' late grandmother June, "Wait for Me" is a shining example of her tremendous growth as a writer and producer.
Waters' soulful roots are evident in the greasy gospel treatment she gave to Sean Staples' "Joy Comes Back to Me" and on "Stone & Concrete", a pensive tale of betrayal set against a backdrop of the Hollywood sign, Beach Boy harmonies and Peter Adams' (Michael Penn) achingly beautiful piano. While the new material hums with deeper R&B grooves, there are several richly romantic heartbreakers for which she is known. Fans of Willie Nelson's Teatro will fall in love with "Six Ways to Sunday" a bittersweet lullaby that mingles Latin flavored guitar with punch drunk Wurli. The disc closes with "Castaway", a passionate Motown-esque narrative inspired by a friend's unplanned pregnancy and bitter divorce.
This April, Waters and songwriting partner McCulley will be touring the Midwest and East Coast. Their first stop is the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City, where the duo will not only perform for the general prison population, but also for death row inmates, a first in the history of the prison. Waters muses, "It's a little mind blowing, especially if you consider that I may be performing the last live music someone hears. Loretta Lynn performed at ISP in the 80s, so at the very least, I'll be following in some pretty solid footsteps."
With rising divas like Feist and Amy Winehouse reminding audiences of the beauty of a good melody soulfully sung, Waters stands to rocket to new heights with "propeller".
