U2 guitarist the Edge said that while "The Hands That Built America" was written specifically for Gangs Of New York (it's also featured on The Best Of 1990-2000), the group hopes it will connect on other levels for those who hear it.
"We do write our songs as an attempt to connect and communicate," Edge said. "But I think they become part of the listener's life in a way that maybe has nothing whatsoever to do with the original intention of Bono as lyricist or the rest of us as writers of the music. The songs take on a whole new meaning after a while."
