RECORD OF THE WEEK
Pink - Please Don't Leave Me:
Pink saves the really brutally honest and personal stuff for her songs. 'So What' was a cry of defiance after her marriage seemed to be falling apart, putting you, the listener, in the room with her while she flicked the Vs at a cruel world (and her ex). Now here's the flipside, a song begging for forgiveness for being quite hard work, and pleading for a second chance. It's either taken directly from her life, or she's a very good character actress.

HOT SHOT RECORD
Green Day - Know Your Enemy:
New single 'Know Your Enemy' blends Green Day's usual political lyrics with a pop-punk beat that leaves you leaping around the room like a complete fool. On top of that the single sleeve has the lyrics printed on the inside, so not only am I prancing around the office to the song, but I'm also singing along whilst trying to decipher the lyrics as the case flies around in front of me. There are no words to describe how sound this comeback' single is, and how pleased the fans who have waited so long for this will be...

Iggy Pop - King Of The Dogs: Iggy's new album 'Preliminaires' features seven songs inspired by France, the book and New Orleans jazz. The video gives a small preview of one of the album's songs, "King Of The Dogs," which opens with the line: "I got a smelly rear / I got a dirty nose / I don't want no shoes / I don't want no clothes." Inspired by the Michel Houellebecq novel Possibility of an Island, and vintage jazz and French chansons this is an atypical album for Iggy, but he has always liked slower stuff. The New Orleans-influenced 'King of the Dogs'with a jazz arrangement featuring trumpet, trombone and clarinettells the story of a dog named Fox who explains 'how cool it is to be a dog, and how much it beats human life.'

Keri Hilson ft. Timbaland - Return The Favor: We have two singers, acting some sort of conversation out to each other. Then they can do little melodic fragments, bash bits and bobs of rhythm against each other, and you're always going to a different place, because you're not relying on one singer's vocal range and their ability to do scales (which does crop up from time to time as a compositional method). One of the choruses towards the end was set over slightly different chords to the others, and it made the whole thing change and grow, and become this unstoppable pop juggernaut.

Maccabees - Love You Better: Here we've got twiddly guitars, we've got hiccupy voices, and we've got sobbing Orlando promising eternal love in a un-aroused but massively romantic way. We've got a band who arrange their songs meticulously, and who know that expressing simple emotions well is often more complicated than it seems. Best of all, we've got a chorus in which a desperate Orlando pleads "I will love you better" five times, with little but a ghostly harmony for company, and it is just lovely.

Miley Cyrus - The Climb: 'The Climb', which has nothing to do with a No Doubt song of the same name, is taken from Hannah Montana: The Movie. It sounds like that kind of song, in that it sounds like a number of other songs (more often than not penned by Diane Warren and/or for an American Idol winner to sing) which detail somewhat generically how life is a journey which is difficult but rewarding. Miley acquits herself well vocally - there are moments where her voice sounds a tad strained, but it's good to hear her on a track that's a little more subdued and with less frantic production than the uptempo, sassy pop songs we're used to.
