LONDON, UK (Classic Fm) - Music fans have voted Lord of the Rings the greatest film soundtrack in a poll for radio station Classic FM. The movie score, from Canadian composer Howard Shore, beat the music from films such as Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia.

More than 44,000 listeners cast their vote in the poll, with the top 30 being counted down on the radio station over the weekend.
Shore, previously known for his work with David Cronenberg, won an Oscar in 2002 for his Lord of the Rings music.

Classic FM presenter Simon Bates said that "Howard Shore is following in the footsteps of composers like Mozart, Rachmaninov and Mahler in bringing new audiences to classical music." It is the second consecutive year that Lord of The Rings has come top of the poll.
The rest of this year's poll shows that, according to the voters, Star Wars composer John Williams is the movie music maestro.
Williams has seven of his soundtracks in the top 50 and three in the top 10.
Star Wars holds the highest position for a Williams score at number three, while Schindler's List is at four and Jurassic Park is at 10.
John Barry, best known for a succession of Bond movie scores, has two titles in the top 10.
They are Out of Africa at number five and Dances With Wolves at number eight.

The Top 50 is dominated by films from the last two decades, although there are some classic films too.
Maurice Jarre's Lawrence of Arabia score is at number nine.
Max Steiner's soundtrack to Gone With the Wind came in at number 11.

Other classics in the list include The Magnificent Seven, Brief Encounter, Chariots of Fire and The Great Escape.
