Santa Barbara, CA (Top40 Charts / Music Academy Official Website) New York Philharmonic Principal Violist Cynthia Phelps will perform with pianist extraordinaire Warren Jones at an alumni reception hosted by the
Music Academy of the West on Friday, January 20. The event will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse, located at 70 Lincoln Center Plaza in New York City.
Ms. Phelps, who attended the
Music Academy in 1979 and 1983, was a Distinguished Alumni Award recipient in 2001. Reception attendees also will include star singers (and Academy alumni)
Sasha Cooke, Evan Hughes, and Susanna Phillips; fellow alumnus and pianist Vassily Primakov; and (in addition to Mr. Jones)
Music Academy faculty members
Hiromi Fukuda,
David Geber, Marilyn Horne,
Jerome Lowenthal, and Don McInnes, who will be announced as the 2012 recipient of the Academy's Distinguished Alumni Award.
The program also will include a special 65th anniversary season announcement by
Music Academy President Scott Reed. The Academy's 2012 Summer Festival will take place June 18 to August 11 and include these classical music luminaries as guest artists: soprano Kiri Te Kanawa; violinist Gil Shaham; conductors
James Gaffigan, Nicholas McGegan,Alexander Lazarev,Larry Rachleff, andAndrew Grams; New York Philharmonic Concertmaster
Glenn Dicterow; percussionist Colin Currie; pianist Ingrid Fliter; and the Miro Quartet. The
Music Academy also will present a fully staged production of "The Rake's Progress" this season.
Founded in 1947, the
Music Academy of the West is among the nation's preeminent summer schools and festivals for gifted young classical musicians.
