BALTOMORE (www.peace-not-war.org) - Baltimore hip hop artist Son of Nun (S.O.N.) has just been confirmed for the second volume of the world renowned Peace Not War CD. His song, Fightback, was one of more than 500 that were submitted by bands across the globe. Only 35 songs could make it onto the compilation and S.O.N. received word earlier this week that his submission had been selected.

The first volume of Peace Not War was a 2 disc compilation of 32 antiwar songs featuring artists such as Public Enemy, Ani DiFranco, Chumbawamba, Asian Dub Foundation, Yo La Tengo, Ms Dynamite, Roots Manuva, Pete Seeger, DJ Spooky, Saul Williams, and Massive Attack. The aim of the compilation was to raise funds for peace groups while providing an uncensored soundtrack for the antiwar movement.

The Peace Not War CD is as grass roots as it gets: produced and funded by Australian musicians Kelly and Mudge, with help from a handful of friends but without any support from an organization. ..With no record label and no promotional budget, the word had to be spread by peace groups, and by DJs and stores who simply liked the music and the cause.
JOHN PILGER: "The Peace Not War CD is vital to the grass roots opposition to war, conquest and occupation. Censorship of anti-war music by the BBC, MTV and other media is all the more reason for doing it yourself."

The new volume of Peace Not War will contain one disc with hip hop and beat-driven music and another disc of rock punk and guitar-driven songs. Artists such as Lauren Hill, Jurassic 5, System of a Down, Sonic Youth, and Jello Biafra have all expressed interest in being on the new volume set to be released on October 4th "to rock the Whitehouse before the election." Volume 2 will be accompanied by 20 pages of anti-war art and lyrics, and like the first volume the second is expected to get plenty of college radio and progressive media coverage. S.O.N.'s song, Fightback, comes from his debut 16 track CD entitled blood and fire which is available for sale online at www.cdbaby.com/sonofnun . blood and fire ranges from political to profoundly personal, to the expression of traditional dope lyricism expected of any hip hop artist worth his salt. S.O.N., unsigned at the moment, is currently soliciting record labels in the U.S. and abroad. He has appeared on Invisible Records' Notes from Thee Real Underground with jungle producer King Rhythm (K.R.) and on K.R.'s album What's Left which was released by the Belgian record label Quatermass.

With innumerable performances under his belt he's developed an electric, engaging, and interactive stage presence that has earned him shows with several established artists in several genres ranging from the drum n' bass of Roni Size & Reprazent, Dieselboy, Adam F, etc to the underground hip hop of Mr. Lif, Akrobatic, Buck 65, Odd Jobs etc. S.O.N. has performed at universities, activist conferences, protests, and rallies like the Sorry State of the Union which protested President Bush's state of the union address where he made his case for war on Iraq. Keep your eye on this guy; he'll be making some waves in the music world.
