MILWAUKEE (AP) - An outdoor jazz festival resumed peacefully Sunday a day after hundreds of people rioted in the streets. Saturday night, about a third of the festival's estimated 6,000 patrons milled in the streets after police began dispersing the crowd at the annual Shermanfest, police said. Nine people were arrested after people vandalized homes and businesses and threw rocks and bottles, police said. "There was a bunch of commotion when (the festival) let out. People got wild," said Rico Evans, 21, who lives in the neighborhood. Officers used tear gas to control the crowd of mostly young adults. Organizers ended the festival half an hour early Sunday, before dark, and the crowd dispersed quickly, said Steve O'Connell, executive director of the Sherman Park Community Association.
