New York, NY (Top40 Charts/ MT Press) Connecticut born singer-songwriter, Liz Wood, showcases honest and fresh songwriting on her newest EP "Into My Own" out today. With pen in hand and years of trials and tribulations behind her, Liz Wood is known for putting her all into her music from an early age. With influences that span genres and decades, she finds familiarity in the songwriting styles of Bob Dylan, Jacob Dylan and the performance styles of greats such as Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison. After making the move out to Los Angeles, Liz found her place in a close knit community of musicians, exploring her own style in a way that eventually created the self-titled pop-infused debut "Liz Wood" produced by good friend Evan Brass. Shortly following the release of her first EP an earth shattering event rocked her life, sending her into a writing tailspin that left lyrics floating around her home on receipts, napkins and even her own skin; all culminating in the songs showcased on "Into My Own" and bringing her sound to new heights reminiscent of Fiona Apple's earlier work.
"Ruin" the first single off of "Into My Own" is a lumbering, gritty opener that carries all the angst needed to call out a bitter ex that doesn't seem to understand the rare power of honesty in a relationship. Wood's voice is gentle yet full of heartfelt soul, standing out above the industrial sound of the drums and the haunting echoes that fill in the empty space throughout the song. "
Hangin' On" showcases the beauty beneath her fingertips as she strips down her sound to just piano and vocals. It's a heartbreaking track that puts Wood's fearlessness at sharing intimacies and speaking in absolutes on full display. You can feel her disappointment and heartbreak in the lilting timbre of her voice to an understated perfection. The upbeat track "
Fall Again" tackles the frustration that comes with venturing out into the dating world, and the ups-and-downs it brings. The rumbling drums and guitar crash and rise with the same emotion that the story tells, while Liz's perfectly controlled vocals stand out stronger than ever, layered over one another for a harmonic breakdown. On another piano driven track, "Can't Hide" the listener is taken on a ride with the full lows of her range and the delicate lifts of her falsetto as she points out the bitterness that comes with an unfortunate end to a serious relationship. It becomes clear that Liz is an expert at crafting ballad's, her stark honesty is loudest when she strips everything bare to allow her story to stand center stage.
"Into My Own" is the EP that almost never was, born out of the demise of a five-year relationship, it shines above the pop-ier side of her previous releases as an honest reflection of who she is, while holding strong to the mainstream sound that keeps her current. Liz Wood is a songwriter that aims to tell stories that draw an audience to reflect and relate, and that is exactly what she accomplishes on each track of "Into My Own." Liz wood stands apart as an eclectic songwriter that has no qualms about exposing the rocky road it took to get this point, taking each chaotic moment and creating a haunting musical masterpiece, sure to find a place on the playlists of her generation and beyond.
