New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Come join celebrated folk-rockers Aztec Two-Step, ''possibly the best acoustic duo in the world today,'' according to Richard Cuccaro in Acoustic Live, for a special early Valentine's Day Show at the Acoustic Café
Music Series in Park Ridge, NJ on Saturday, February 9th.
Aztec Two-Step takes its name from the poem "A Coney Island of the Mind" by award-winning beat poet, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and since 1971 Fowler and Shulman have been writing and performing songs that helped make their generation's musical memories. Exactly one year after their serendipitous meeting at an open mic in Boston, Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman burst upon the scene with their 1972 Elektra Records debut. That debut, and their three subsequent releases on RCA, helped define the duo as bringing the folk-rock music of the 1960s into the '70s and beyond.
In 1987, the duo's Living in
America received the New York
Music Award for Best Folk Album and was named in Billboard's year-end critic's poll.
Continuously praised in major media outlets such as Rolling Stone, Aztec Two-Step was the subject of a documentary that aired on PBS in 1999, following numerous appearances on TV and radio shows such as
David Letterman, King Biscuit Flour Hour and World Café Live.
The
Boston Globe lauded their 2005 studio release, Days of Horses, saying "fans of the duo's harmony-driven tunes and easygoing acoustic guitar riffs will recognize their
James Taylor-meets-Simon & Garfunkel sound."
In June of 2007, thirty-five years after the release of their debut album, Aztec Two-Step performed the album's The Persecution and Restoration of Dean Moriarty (On The Road) in Lowell, Mass., at a very special Lowell Celebrates Kerouac Festival, as the author's hometown marked the 50th anniversary of the publication of Kerouac's On The Road. Also that year, the song was included in Rhino Records Forever Changing-The Golden Age of Elektra Records 1963-1973, a five-CD box set that tells the story of this landmark record label and the music that defined an era.
In 2008, the duo released Time It Was-The
Simon & Garfunkel Songbook (Red Engine Records), a live album of S&G's music, featuring narration by legendary DJ and music historian Pete Fornatale, who provided commentary and insights based on his interviews with
Simon & Garfunkel.
An early 2012 release of Cause & Effect, a new studio CD, commemorates Fowler & Shulman's 40th Anniversary. It is a collection of sixteen songs of social significance produced by Paul Guzzone and featuring long-time bassist Fred Holman. The album is a combination of re-worked previously recorded songs, as well as newly mined material.
Aztec Two-Step continues to be one of acoustic music's most respected and popular acts. The duo's ability to impress audiences with intelligent songwriting, dazzling acoustic lead guitar and inspiring harmonies continues not only to endure, but to thrive, 40 years after a chance meeting at an open stage in a
Boston coffee house.
''… the right sound at the right time … beautiful acoustic guitar playing and questioning lyrics … songs performed with forceful vocals and near perfect instrumental harmonies.'' -- Variety
